(115,661 posts)I don't know ASL but I've read that facial expressions and body movements, not just hand signs, are part of the grammar of ASL. https://www.mentalfloss.com/article/12964/why-do-sign-language-interpreters-look-so-animated

(3,013 posts)if youre an ASL interpreter. It was once explained to me that facial and body expressions are used to convey tone.

(23,522 posts)certain sounds are part of the grammar.
It's more based on French than English. Thomas Galluadet in 1815 went to France and took their sign language to the USA and adapted it.
Also, like other languages there are accents. I live in Chicago. If I sign with others they know I have a California accent because I learned ASL in Oakland.

(2,215 posts)On DeWines daily updates I love to watch the lady that signs! Last year went to Red Rocks for a OneRepublic concert and spent most of the concert watching the signers. We were lucky enough to be front row so I was really close to them. It was amazing. Now-off to find the signer youre talking about!!!
Shes great, isnt she?
At yesterdays presser she and another signer were trading places constantly. I was wondering why.

(52,155 posts)it is very demanding work. Especially to do so for such a public event. I was rather surprised there was no trading going on at that press conference.

(2,215 posts)Just read a couple of articles about them-very interesting. I didnt know that Marla Berkowitz is deaf. She has someone in the audience signing to her what is being said so she can sign it to the camera. Lena Smith, the younger lady with the colorful hair replaces her because its physically and mentally exhausting to translate for an extended period of time, according to the articles. Also explains about the facial expressions they use and why and how they will mouth the first syllable of some words to aid in their interpretation of whats being said. Pretty cool!!

(3,246 posts)The sign-language interpreters throughout this whole pandemic. They are all extremely animated and fascinating to watch. It does cause you not to pay attention to whats being said. A couple of days ago, we muted the sound and just watched the interpreter. We were mesmerized.
