6. I was going to ask but a Comment answered, why his statue here?

The comment answer was: 1) city named for him, 2) gratitude for French help in Revolutionary War, 3) if more people knew how much the help helped there would be less mocking of French things.

So, I got educated. And told. That said, France had an interest, too.
