Clinton was elected after the 1992 LA Riots....

..... when there was a recession not nearly as deep as this one and there was NO pandemic that was bollocksed up by the sitting president.

Perhaps the hand-wringing is a bit premature?

the current level of looting and violence will push some people towards authoritarianism. But I realize that might only be the case for people with authoritarian tendencies to begin with, and they tend to be Trump supporters already, or possibly nonvoters. So that might not make much difference.

My hope is that the current unrest will settle down eventually, and people will see the Covid-19 poor response as the cause of the economic disaster, and vote accordingly. So I mostly agree with the OP. Fingers crossed.

He brought it out in the open & legitmized the horror. He appropriated funding for research & stood with them when it was despised, hushed & mocked.

What was his effort as President on behalf of the AIDS epidemic?

The United States former President Clinton established the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI) in 2002 to lessen discrimination and to close the gap in treatment access.
This was accomplished by negotiating lower prices for lifesaving antiretroviral treatment (ARV) and by working with governments to improve the national health care systems required to deliver crucial medicines.
CHAI has now expanded its scope of work beyond ARVs to increase access to diagnostics and malaria medicines, as well as to address a variety of issues that must be overcome in order to turn the tide of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, including: supporting governments in delivery of services; increasing human resource capacity for care; and preventing the transmission of the disease from mothers to their children.

Main activities
CHAI focuses on worldwide issues that demand urgent action, solutions, and measurable results -- global climate change, HIV/AIDS in the developing world, childhood obesity and economic opportunity in the United States, and economic development in Africa and Latin America.
The Foundation, working in collaboration with governments and other partners, makes a significant impact in the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world.
The mission of CHAI is to strengthen the capacity of people in the United States and throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence.
The Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative is helping to turn the tide on the HIV/AIDS pandemic..."

Clintons, Gores Visit Growing Aids Quilt
Sat., Oct. 12, 1996

SNIP

"“I have several friends who will be laid out in the panels,” said Joe Wassam, a Takoma Park, Md., volunteer helping put the quilt down on the grassy Mall. “This is a way of being back with them.”

The quilt, bearing the names of more than 70,000 people on 38,000 panels, is the centerpiece of dozens of weekend events sponsored by several groups, designed to again focus attention on the epidemic.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to see the quilt over the long Columbus Day weekend.

Friendly crowds greeted President Clinton and his wife Hillary Rodham Clinton when they strolled, sometimes hand in hand, through sections of the sun-dappled quilt in late afternoon.

“This means a lot to us,” someone shouted. “We love you,” cried another.

Another volunteer thanked Clinton for being the first president to visit the quilt. When it was here in 1988, President Reagan was in office; in 1992, it was President Bush..."
