Someone who opposed Hitler and Mussolini before the declaration of war after Pearl Harbor.

If you were opposed to fascism on ideological grounds rather than military necessity, your politics were suspect. You were regarded as a communist sympathizer.

One of the first groups in the United States to use the name was Rose City Antifa, which says it was founded in 2007 in Portland, Ore. It has a large following on social media, where it shares news articles and sometimes seeks to dox, or reveal the identities and personal information of, figures on the right.

The antifa movement gained more visibility in 2017 after a series of events that put a spotlight on anti-fascist protesters, including the punching of a prominent alt-right member; the cancellation of an event by a right-wing writer at the University of California, Berkeley; and their confrontation of white nationalist protesters in Charlottesville who turned violent.

What distinguishes antifa from other protest groups?
Mr. Bray said antifa groups often use tactics similar to anarchist groups, such as dressing in all black and wearing masks. The groups also have overlapping ideologies, as both often criticize capitalism and seek to dismantle structures of authority, including police forces.

Fighting against the Nazis, or imperial Japan, in WW2 is not quite the same thing as "the dismantle of police forces" or squashing 1st amendment rights.

Sorry.

as liberal fascism. Fascism is an extreme manifestation of conservatism.

Btw, the Republicans had to have an agent write a book on "liberal fascism" so people would find something when searching on the term. They created it because "fascism" has very bad connotations, so they needed to deflect their own increasingly fascistic behaviors left onto evil liberal Democrats. After all, the indispensable fascistic technique of election theft becomes not just good but embraced when it's to stop the Democrats.

"Liberalism is the individual. Fascism is the state." Fascist Mussolini

“… Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our own will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law,’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the right of an individual” Liberal Thomas Jefferson

Trump himself is conflating his being terrified of us with baaad terrorism. Of course.

The word had meaning in social use for centuries before it was applied in Adam Smith's time in the 17th century to politics and economics, and later with development of the study of the mind to one of the two main personality groups (because the common use arising from that personality type made it appropriate). Liberal ideals have always been associated with the concept of a free man, eventually advancing society and ending serfdom in Europe.

Thanks to digitization, we can now establish when the word “liberal” first took on a political meaning. For centuries it had had what scholars have called pre-political meanings, such as generous, tolerant, or suitable to one of noble or superior status—as in “liberal arts” and “liberal education.” But now using Google’s Ngram Viewer we can see what the word “liberal”—as an adjective—was used to modify. Up to 1769 the word was used only in pre-political ways, but in and around 1769 such terms as “liberal policy,” “liberal plan,” “liberal system,” “liberal views,” “liberal ideas,” and “liberal principles” begin sprouting like flowers. ...

At the core of Smith’s idea of liberal principles is the idea of natural liberty:

All systems either of preference or of restraint, therefore, being thus completely taken away, the obvious and simple system of natural liberty establishes itself of its own accord. Every man, as long as he does not violate the laws of justice, is left perfectly free to pursue his own interest his own way, and to bring both his industry and capital into competition with those of any other man, or order of men. ...

On the Continent, “liberal” was used, as compared to in Britain, more to denote constitutional reform and political participation, as opposed to natural liberty. Britain’s exceptional history of stable government and islandhood helped to make Smith’s focus on natural liberty possible. ..

This may be seen as a moral weakness by some, but I keep hearing conflicting reports. Of course, I am against the concept of fascism. I am also very "for" freedom. But there are many groups out there with freedom in the name whose agendas I find questionable.

So, while I am trying to judge this group by its fruits and compile an informed decision, I also must admit that hearing Trump declare Anitfa a terrorist group is the most compelling endorsement of their social value that I have encountered thus far.

This is a man who insists that men shouting "Jews will not replace us!" were "very fine people". People carrying a flag symbolizing slavery, the overthrow of American rule of law and another flag symbolizing the subjugation of Europe to the control of one homicidal maniac are "very fine people" to him.

So, yes, Antifa is looking better all the time.

About a year ago, my sister, who spouts everything she hears on Fox news, started in about how bad "Antifa" was. I asked her if she knew what "Antifa" stood for? She said not and I told her it stood for anti-fascists. I went on to tell her that the United States fought a war against Fascists that resulted in the deaths of over half a million American soldiers. She got a huffy and told me, "you think you know so much, I don't want to talk about it anymore'.

So typical of a Fox viewer. I let it all slide, after all she is my sister. But .. I have a brother and another sister who are also Fox viewers and believe all that right wing crap. Yipes!
