And you can bet your bottom dollar the fascist republicans will rally around their kook leader. Much more dangerous than Trump because he will appeal to many conservative Democrats and middle-of-the-roaders. Romney would get more substantial conservative agenda items completed because he wouldn't waste political capital on idiotic ideas like a border wall. The republicans are yearning for another Reagan and they will get him in Mitt Romney, if liberals don't stay united.

(102,119 posts)As you clearly know and sought to ignore, I stated clearly that "I am in no way promoting, nor would I support Romney."
Your hyperbole aside, Romney is not, as you say more dangerous than Trump. Not by a long stretch.
Yeehah
(4,568 posts)I believe a reasonable interpretation of that statement is that Romney is not as bad as I was making him out to be.
I did not claim you were supporting or promoting Romney, so I suggest it is you who has misrepresented what I posted.
Have a great day!

(102,119 posts)some perspective. That is beyond ridiculous in any context.
AND you misrepresented what I said in the blatant attempt to suggest I supported Romney. That is beyond unacceptable.

(4,568 posts)I believe Romney would be more dangerous than Trump because Romney is intelligent, well-spoken, and completely dedicated to the conservative cause. Circus clown Trump has self-destructed after 4 years and nearly taken the whole republican party with him. I hope that helps to clarify my statement that Romney is more dangerous than Trump. I remember the Reagan years.

(31,261 posts)Unlike our insurgents, they can read the tea leaves. If they see that they can win by voting for someone they detest, they will vote for that person and bide their time. They know that he won't wreck their philosophy, just not give them all they want, while keeping their future wants in play. Our side can learn from that.

(490 posts)Theres a reason the GOP are so successful, and its because they know how to win! One, they know the power of unity, and that it gives them a sizeable in-built advantage against a relatively flaky opposition base. Two, they know the power of swaying independent voters with simple, sharp slogans that prey on fear / jealousy of poor people getting something for nothing and, you know what? Its effective.
My belief is that the GOP is fundamentally about ramming its drastically unfair economic program through. Always has been, but theyve been given opportunities they never should have so they want more. More extreme, less fair for people outside the gilded class.
The social, moral stuff - as we see with the embrace of a depraved huckster in Trump - is a rallying cry to dumb people who know no better. The right have been able to shape the system and tilt the board because they know the importance of winning first and nitpicking later, but there's a certain irony in the fact that the USA would have edged closer to the sort of progressive policy many on the left hold dear if they didnt throw a huff and vote for Nader or Stein in their hundreds of thousands.
Look, Im decidedly left wing - Im also a pragmatist who knows that its much easier to blow things up than it is to put them back together again. I know not every election is winnable, but if people on our side werent so damn quick to register protest votes or just stay at home, wed have won more (in each branch of government) and forced the GOP to end the culture war shit and try to win on actual ideas.

(31,261 posts)I often longingly think of where we would be if the far left had JUST DONE ONE of the following:
Vote for Humphrey in 68
Vote for Carter in 80
Vote for Gore in 2000
Vote for Kerry in 2004
Vote for Hillary in 2016
Instead, at each of those critical times, it chose instead to manufacture enemies out of people that share 95% of their values.
I am a Social Democrat by values and temperament. But I have often held my nose and voted for a democrat that wasn't where I am at politically. The simple reason for that vote is that democrat was not going to set the effort to get a social democratic society back one to two decades like the republican would. So my vote was a practical one, by voting for the democrat, I chose to not get set back in my efforts and have to start from scratch.

(66,284 posts)It seems to me that Romney is in the doghouse with the GOP for the sin of being an occasionally decent human being. He may enjoy the approbation he is currently receiving from the above-average half of America. He may not want to give that up, and subject himself again to the electron microscope of scrutiny a Presidential campaign brings.

(4,568 posts)The primary purpose of Fox "News" is to indoctrinate gullible people in the USA to support the republican party, which is in the interests of the plutocrats running the country right now. The deplorables don't give a shit that Trump is a sinner; they won't give a shit that Romney is a Mormon. Fox "News" can be counted on to produce lots of Mormon-friendly pieces and how they all worship the same Jesus. The gullible working class people who worshiped St. Ronnie will worship St. Romney. After Trump loses this November, he will become an irrelevant sideshow.

The Murdochs only own 39% of Fox. Unless you have evidence to the contrary, it's highly unlikely the other shareholders who own 61% of the stock are so rich that they don't care if Fox News makes money.

(1,442 posts)The Republican redneck base is still going to be redneck, and Turd will not just magically disappear from the political scene after losing reelection. Being a Mormon from Utah, Mittens is in a unique position that allows him to distance himself a bit from Turd. The rest of the professional Republican politicians do not dare do that, because they know they will be 'primaried out of office' if they're even suspected of thinking about it.
Other than those few states with high Mormon populations, I don't believe Mittens will get far in the primaries.

Romney is their Senatorial savior to get the moderates back into the fold in time. The base is shrinking due to one simple reason...death. Eventually they will reach a critical moment to move with the country...or...die as a party. Thinking its more likely former.
