Seriously. I also think Huntsman use of Chinese made him look like a stooge for Chinese job outsourcing, not smart. Obama is going to have to start appealing to working class people rather than just wallstreet. He is offering nothing right now.

(475 posts)any major party candidate is offering that will produce lots and lots of jobs for ordinary Americans. The social liberal only dems just arent living in the real world.

(23,973 posts)jet engines, heavy mining equipment, high-end electrical switching gear, harvesting equipment, chemicals, aerospace...well, you get the drift.
We would be foolish to start a tariff war against cheap imported plastic junk, when our exports would be retaliated against and we would be on the losing end of it.
50% of the profit of the S&P 500 is derived from exports. A trade war would slaughter jobs in this country by the hundreds of thousands.
Romney will do exactly *nothing* about tariffs, Wall Street would shut him down in nothing flat on that score...and they would be right.

(16,038 posts)to the volume of shit (literally) being imported, made by slaves. Boeing just announced the veiled exportation of 20k jobs in Kansas in favor of cheap labor in China, for lack of fair trade. Side up with wall street, spew forth their talking points, I'm sure they will reciprocate..
Never mind the $245 billion dollar trade deficit..you really should quit listening to the trade liars..

I think most Americans would simply settle for Fair Trade Deals which included equal tariffs, trade restrictions, Evironmental laws and labor standards

(339 posts)"During the 2008 presidential race, Romney released a comprehensive proposal on trade. In it, he advocated the conclusion of the multilateral Doha Round that would achieve broad reductions in trade barriers. He also supported renewing trade promotion authority, which would allow the President to negotiate freer trade without a committee of 535 members of Congress gumming up the works.
In his recent book, Romney also voiced his opposition to President Bushs steel tariff decision and President Obamas decision to impose tariffs on foreign tires. "

First, sorry for quoting CFG, but I wanted to dredge up an article that would be Romney-friendly.
How can he be for tariffs if he was originally against them? And I'm sure if brought up during a debate Obama will bring that to his attention.

(475 posts)changed his mind. flipflopping happens all the time. We have seen obama in practice and it aint pretty for the working class.

(339 posts)If Romney wins is it fair to say that he'll have a majority in both the House and Senate? I think so.
With that being said, IF Mitt Romney decided to stick to his word how many "Club For Growth" Republicans will follow him? How many of these Groverites will be willing to put a tax on imported goods?
Not many if none at all. He'll be relying on Democrats to push that through, but realistically McChinless and Boner will make sure it's DOA.

(475 posts)and he didnt extend the tax breaks on the rich, or reduce estate taxes on their brats. He didnt push unpopular mandates instead of public option. No there are no goldman sucks guys in the white house, and he broke up the banks too, and put strings on tarp. He didnt nominate any republicans to serve on the board of the Fed. There is no republican appointed to head his treasury department. There are no 99ers in America who have run out of unemployment benefits either. Yeah he is so good for working class people.

(28,762 posts)any republican is a laugh. They are the ones who created the unfair trade to begin with. Sorry but I'll never trust a republican to do what is right, especially this flip flopper!
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, The Club For Growth, and Grover Norquist oppose ANY tariff increases, and I'm sure Mittens will need to suck major ass from all three in order to help him win in November.

"The U.S. uses more than 300 anti- dumping and countervailing duty orders to shield American-made goods, from honey to bedroom furniture, against global competition it deems unfair and damaging to U.S. companies. About half the orders target iron and steel products.
China accounts for a third of all U.S. actions on imports, the most of any country, including about 100 anti-dumping and more than two dozen countervailing duty orders, according to the U.S. trade commission.
The Obama administration filed a trade complaint against China at the World Trade Organization in December 2010 over its support for wind-energy manufacturers through aid tied to the use of locally produced content. China agreed to end hundreds of millions of dollars in such subsidies, the U.S. trade office said in June."

President Obama Opts for Import Tariffs on Chinese Tires
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/09/11/AR2009091103957.html
In one of his first major decisions on trade policy, President Obama opted Friday to impose a tariff on tires from China in response to complaints that a surge of imports had undermined the U.S. industry and contributed to the loss of more than 5,000 jobs.
The tariff will amount to 35 percent the first year, 30 percent the second year and 25 percent the third year. A federal trade panel had recommended a levy of 55 percent.
The decision represents a victory for the United Steelworkers union, which had filed the trade complaint under a section of U.S. law intended specifically to protect U.S. manufacturers from Chinese imports. China's government, tire importers and some U.S. tire manufacturers with plants overseas had strenuously objected to the measure.
"The President decided to remedy the clear disruption to the U.S. tire industry based on the facts and the law in this case," the White House said in a statement released Friday night.

(3,678 posts)Both the Fed and the Treasury have propped up the value of the dollar in recent decades (to Wall Street's benefit). A 10% reduction in the value of US currency vs. our trading partners should result in about 5 million additional American manufacturing jobs.
