General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI been reading (somewhere on DU) that when a vaccination is created
There will be many who will refuse the treatment because they will be afraid the shot will give them Covid 19 and they will die. This maybe a problem.. if people refuse to take the vaccination than the spread will continue and more people will die.
So it took some time for people to believe there was a real pandemic in this country. After 140 thousand deaths it becomes apparent that something is out of place when the bodies start stacking up in refrigerator trucks. The next step is to talk people into taking the vaccination because... Science.
No Vaccination is available yet, but when there is one, how would you suggest people be educated so they know its better to take the vaccination than not?

(21,846 posts)CDC has become politicized. People think the FDA has or will become politicized too.
We will need a new administration before people will feel safe taking a vaccination approved by the FDA.

(22,336 posts)It's isn't the risk of the vaccine vs. nothing. It's the risk of the vaccine vs. the pandemic continuing and people (including maybe you) getting sick. This illness has a lot of long-lasting effects on people. It's more dangerous than any vaccine that's had safety testing, and this vaccine is getting safety testing.

(112,134 posts)1) I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic who has had that disease for over two decades.
2) My age -- over 50.
3) I live with my brother who is also a respiratory therapist who is in contact with COVID -19 patients.
Even if a vaccine is safety-tested, I would wait to take it since the side effects might not be present until months or even years after the vaccine is administered. The articles I read have stated that it might require two or more injections in order to be effective and that it might require additional injections periodically similar to having to take a flu vaccination each year.
I'm not going to jump to be the near the front of the line. I'll be patient, read the information about the vaccine including medical journals since I have a reasonably strong science background (courses in biochemistry and pharmacology), and have friends that have expertise that exceeds my background. Meanwhile, I'll continue to practice social distancing and wearing facial coverings which I have done since early March. I can't eliminate the risks that I face living with my brother, but I don't see myself having any significant social interactions with anyone else for the remainder of 2020 so the chances that I would be spreading the virus are also extremely small.

(92,168 posts)vaccine, it isnt going to give them SARS COV2. It may not be as effective as some would like though, 50% effective perhaps, so people should still wear masks in public
Because of the misinformation trump and his thugs have pushed, perhaps 20% of the populace has a problem with masks
I suspect the same percentage would apply to getting a vaccine.
If respected people such as Fauci endorse it, I think most will take the vaccine

(22,336 posts)and even with a live vaccine it only made 450 people sick out of the 45 million who got the vaccine. And it isn't a zero-sum game. It's the risk of the vaccine vs. the risk of not having the vaccine, which is much higher with this illness.

But in the end i have to trust the FDA, and don't have a problem with that.
If I participate in the trial, I will be running on faith. I have no idea whether it would be difficult to get a spot in the trial (i.e. all spots will be taken immediately) or easy. I still have not seen a list of the 90 (or so) trial sites.

(34,065 posts)I will review the published studies, read critiques, study the theory if, as anticipated it may not be a clone of existing vaccines.
A good example is that all relevant US groups now recommend statins automatically for all type 2 diabetics. That is certainly easier than making the tougher individualized assessments necessary to individually manage CVD risk. But statins are not innocuous. I'm addition to blocking the production of cholesterol, they also block the production of other compounds that are essential to heart (and other) health. For many people with diabetes cholesterol is a more significant risk, and statins are necessary. But not all cholesterol is the same. When I look at European recommendations, they are more refined (i.e. It is not an all or nothing recommendation) And when I drop down another layer to look directly at the risk factors, I have not, in the entire time I have had diabetes, even come close to the level of dangerous cholesterol that would decrease my CVD risk by taking statins, and it might even increase it.
So doctor's recommendation: statins - all the relevant U.S. Orgs say they are safe, and you need them.
Independent verification: nope. Not a good risk fit for me. I'm tracking my cholesterol, and if/when that changes, we'll revisit it.
As to the vaccines, without having any details yet, since there are so many in the pipeline, at a minimum, it has to be safe (so I will be carefully reviewing side effects) and at least 50% effective. Beyond that, it has to use a mechanism that makes scientific sense.

(2,626 posts)long time before they've got enough vaccines. Health care workers and first responders will likely be the first ones to get the vaccines. By the time they are ready for the rest of us to get them we should have a pretty good idea of whether they're safe.
At this point though, I'd rather get a vaccine from a country in Europe or even Canada. But that may not be possible.
I've been thinking about this a lot. It could happen that travel outside the country will not be permitted without proof of vaccination for Covid19 due to countries that have it under control not wanting unvaccinated people around.

(112,134 posts)that people on DU were critical of Gov. Rick Perry's push for young women to get the HPV vaccine saying that it was a violation of their rights. While HPV is far less serious than the coronavirus, I certainly understand why some people are rushing to the front of the line for vaccine trials. Thirty years ago when I was in better health I might have volunteered, but since I have a chronic disease and other health issues I'm willing to be patient even if that means that I have isolate myself or continue practicing social distancing.

(3,013 posts)The sort of weird thing is is that the gross strains of HPV that caused the warts are not actually the deadly strains. The vaccine covers the deadly strains that cause cancer.
I can understand a little reluctance to get a vax fresh in the market though. However there are STILL people fighting getting it. Which is ridiculous.

(112,134 posts)The other night I went to the laundry room to retrieve my clothing and I had a hypoglycemic reaction and nearly didn't make it back to the apartment which is about 30 yards away. I've also had an idiot swerve and try to hit me while riding my bike.
At some point, I will do the research and weigh the risk/benefit aspect and also consider my duty to society by getting vaccinated. That applies to both the HPV vaccine and a potential COVID vaccine.
I've lived more than a decade longer than the average lifespan for someone in my demographic group. If some disease or medical condition affects me, then my only request is that I receive medical treatment to reduce any pain associated with that condition. While I don't have a death wish, the only event that I would like to attend in the distant future is the bicentennial of my college alma mater in 2040. Otherwise, I'm mentally and morally prepared to accept whatever fate is in store for me.

(19,564 posts)This is serious stuff, and I'm taking the old polio approach with this virus and vaccine. I doubt the first one will be "the one" but I'll do what I can to slow it down until the perfect vaccine exists.
We have to slow this virus down. Even before we can even begin to dream of controlling it. I'm doing what I can now, but any approved vaccine will also be a layer in my arsenal against this virus.

Second, I am someone who needs to be at the end of the line for the vaccine. I'm retired. Staying home is easy for me. There are many, many people who need to be ahead of me in line to get the vaccine.
So yeah, I'll be getting it months after it's released.
