The wingnuts with guns at the protests are not Militia, organized or unorganized. They are
vigilantes. Or, if you prefer, assholes with guns. Legitimizing them by referencing them as Militia is incorrect and harmful to true Militia. True Militia are very real soldiers who have taken an oath to protect and defend the constitution of the United States.
They hold no loyalty to anything other than their personal wish to do harm to people they don’t like. Just like Civil War re-enactors they are playing. Playing at a potentially deadly game of chicken.
They have not been vetted or checked out. They have taken no known or recognized oaths. They have no accountable chain of command and they recognize no authority.
Just because someone dresses up as a soldier doesn’t make them one. Their clothing is designed to impart the threat that they can kill without consequence. They, at best, are trying to intimidate and At worst maybe even terrorize.
Some of these groups and individuals have been identified as the most dangerous threat of terrorism in America by the FBI and DOJ. They seem friends with law enforcement now, but when cops stop killing the people these vigilantes don’t like, they may well turn on the cops. Some of these groups and individuals believe the only legitimate authority in this country is the “Sheriff “.
White supremacy, fascism, nativism have long simmered in the shadows in America. These days, with trump leading the way, it’s ugly head is crawling out of the shadows and glorying in the chaos , hurt, pain and anger.
Do not give these people the honor of the title “Militia”.
