Generic question about journalism

The Atlantic wrote the blockbuster piece on drumpf’s hatred is soldiers.

The story has four sources which will have been confirmed by the writer and his editor.

The story has since been confirmed with senior officials by the AP and also WAPI

my question is, if the sources are a secret, how do the AP and WAPO know who to talk to to confirm them?

So probably the AP and WAPO could make a good guess about who the sources were and contact them separately.

Heck he has before. But I really want to hear it. I despise him and wouldn’t vote for him if he cured cancer. But, there’s too much “sources said,” etc. I want to see or, at least, hear it.
