Democrat versus Republican presidential retirements
When it comes to candidates, democrats fall in love; republicans fall in line.
So I've been alive for nine presidents, and I've noticed that after they stop presidenting, republicans tend to fade away from the public view while democrats don't. Dems normally start foundations or pitching for causes they believe in or building a crapton of houses. With Nixon and Reagan, that's kind of understandable. Nixon probably just wanted to hide out, and Reagan was probably suffering from some sort of dementia for at least part of his second term, but you never heard much from Ford and the two Bushes unless HW was sky-diving or there was a puff piece on W's paintings post-Oval Office. They don't tend to make appearances at the RNC.
And I wonder if that's because republicans do tend to fall in line more, and it's because republicans believe that the office of the presidency is more of a utilitarian position. Once you're done, it's time to get off the stage so we can start glorifying the next guy as being handpicked by God to lead us, and we don't need any distractions.
Which makes me wonder. When Trump loses and is facing all his legal problems, will it suddenly be, "Donald Tru... Trump? Are you saying Trump?" from republicans. And that's just lawmakers, but republican voters seem to do the same thing. Will his most rabid supporters today care about what he's doing post presidency?
