(1,789 posts)The Atlantic story is as good a reason as any. There were thousands more, but they didn't take any of those opportunities. It would make Sunday morning shows a little more interesting if one came out and blasted Trump instead of the usual excuses they craft on Saturdays.

They were told they should 'distance themselves' from Trump - IOW, forget shoring him up, just do whatever you can to save your own political ass.
Of course, there are many GOPers up for re-election who simply have nowhere else to go. They've attached themselves too inextricably to his actions and policies to 'distance' themselves now.

(6,390 posts)They needed to break the chains to Trump back in June. I think Mitch over estimated severely just how far Trump would go. He probably should have never informed him he had until labor day. Only to find out, not only was Trump willing to take a shit on them, but make sure he had explosive diarrhea.
And Mitch sure as hell didn't expect more and more books, anonymous sources, etc. to hit the fan. He probably thought they were through the worst of it.
Just watch Collins, if she's still towing the line after Labor Day, its already too late for them to reverse course.
