Would Trump lose his Christian base if he were to say

that Jesus was a "loser" for being crucified, that he liked saviors who didn't get killed, that he didn't understand why Jesus sacrificed himself?

I'd bet not.

I'd also bet that Trump actually *has* said those things.

Christians believe Christ rose from the dead, so he (we) won in the end. They might even concede that Jesus “lost” on Good Friday, but only because he actively chose to lose. It might even be OK to “dislike” the Earthly Jesus, so long as one adores and glorifies the Risen Jesus.

The RW propaganda machine on the AM radio and FAUX would be in damage control overdrive, screeching fake news, librul coastal elite conspiracy, and Joe Biden breathed wrong in 1987. Then, the wingnut preacher brigade would swing into action in the pulpit and on their TV and radio shows with more of the same, both hands out for cash "love offerings."

call themselves Christians in the first place. According to the Gospels, Jesus didn't have a place to lay his head and he stood up for the poor and against the wealthy. The PGEs seem to celebrate all that Jesus was against, and I think that's why they're such avid followers of Trump. For a long time, the PGEs have been looking for an antichrist like Trump to come along and justify their selfish philosophy.

The one who says...

Rob the poor to pay the rich.
Throw the poor out onto the streets.
Put Immigrant children in cages like animals.
Lying is a Virtue.
Stoke racial tensions.
Deny people of their Human, Civil, and Constitutional rights.

Trump's followers are not Christians in the truest sense of the word, for they behave in the OPPOSITE manner that Jesus preached. They are members of a CULT.

Have learned to turn a blind eye to all of his failings. If Trump denied his faith, on TV, in front of a live audience, his Christian supporters would claim that he was being sarcastic, or that the message was out of context, or that the whole thing was just more fake news.

I have a sister, who is very smart, well educated, a retired teacher, married to a professor, who would excuse any of Trump's behavior, because that is what he preacher preaches. The same mental qualities that allow people to accept religion based upon faith, instead of facts, opens the door to manipulation in other arenas. I consider the ability to deny the obvious, and accept fantasy in its place, as a form of mental illness. I believe that my sister and her husband are sick.

the circumstances of the death of Jesus. He might have some vague, passing notion, but I doubt he knows any details. Trump's only interest in anything, religion included, is how he can use it to benefit him.

they have a personal definition of the word Christian (or Racist, Liberal etc)
We not only argue, we disagree on what were arguing about.
Christian:Follower of Christ vs. I go to church, so I'm good
Racist: Believes "Race" is a real difference vs I don't own a black person
Were not even speaking the same language.

and "The Art of the Deal" was the new Gospel and ordered all his followers to burn their Bibles a sizable percentage of them would comply and sink to their knees before their new savior.

Some would be the cynics who don't believe a word of what they preach but see genuine believers as rubes to exploit for money and votes.

The rest would followers who will accept any drivel as long as it reinforces their hatred of "the other"--people of color, gays, people with disabilities, feminists, etc.

Remember, Trump in all seriousness called himself "The Chosen One" on camera.

Would be if he announced that he would single-handedly ensure that abortion rights would be guaranteed for all women in the USA through eternity. And if he repeated it several times and confirmed several times that he said it and meant it on FOX news and in interviews with Hannity and Limbaugh.

Then, and only then, would he lose this base.

Everything he does is part of God's plan. Therefore in their eyes he can do no wrong. If a Democrat does something, anything, good, bad, or indifferent it's because Satan is working through them and trying to defeat tRump the anointed one. Therefore they see everything the Democrats do as being the work of Satan.

most of Trump's white evangelical supporters aren't exactly Bible scholars. Many would have a very difficult time if asked to explain the basic tenets of the Christian faith. They simply grew up in a church family, the church is still a central focus of their lives, and most everyone in their church (and especially the preacher) thinks the Democrats are evil and blasphemous.

It's totally lost on them that most everyone in the formal priesthood also thought Yeshua and his rabble of followers were evil and blasphemous, eventually going so far as to pressure the occupying military forces into executing him.
