A veteran's story

My husband has a cousin whose father served in WWII. The cousin was also a veretan. At some point, as a mature adult, the cousin went to France, to the place his Dad was stationed. When he arrived in the town where his Dad had been stationed, he learned that his father and other soldiers stationed in that town, who had protected it, were still treated as heroes. The local bar still had pictures of the WWII U.S. soldiers on the walls, and the U.S. troops were commemorated on the anniversary of WWII each year. When they found out who the son was related to, he was treated like a rock star. The cousin said he had no idea that his father and the rest of the soldiers had been honored this way.

I heard the story from the cousin several years ago. U.S. military troops have made a difference all over the world wherever they are stationed. We hear about the bad things that happen when soldiers do harm. But we forget about the good that our military actions have done in the past, which have instilled goodwill over the world.

That is how we protect it here at home. So many of our fellow citizens seem to have forgotten that basic fact.

a veteran who was part of the Normandy invasion. When our tour group arrived at one of the landing locations,, the tour guide mentioned to the authorities there that our group included this veteran. Everyone wanted to shake his hand and be photographed with him. He was totally unprepared for the honor and respect shown to him.
