The Border Patrol made this dramatized video showing migrant killing innocent victim in a dark alley

A fictionalized video produced by the Border Patrol and posted this week to its YouTube channel shows a Spanish-speaking attacker stabbing and killing a man in a dark alley after escaping from U.S. agents, a clip apparently created to dramatize President Trump’s depiction of migrants as fearsome criminals.

The three-minute video, titled “The Gotaway,” is produced in the visual style of a television show like Netflix’s series “Narcos,” with aerial drone footage, actors and fake blood. “Gotaway” is the Border Patrol term for an undocumented migrant who evades capture.

The video ends with the lurid image of the stabbing victim bleeding and dying on the ground. “Every apprehension matters,” a message on screen reads. “Do you know who got away?”

The message fades to a Fox News headline about the 2015 killing of Kate Steinle in San Francisco, followed by a rapid-fire cascade of other news clips and headlines about killings linked to immigrants illegally present in the United States.

The Border Patrol’s logo appears in the final scene, metallic and glinting. “Protecting America Everyday,” it says. “Honor First.”

5. 'The Gotaway': Online video produced and posted by the Border Patrol spreads fear of migrants

A video produced by U.S. Border Patrol agents and shared across several official government social media accounts this week begins like the cold opening of a true-crime thriller. A Border Patrol vehicle sits parked in what looks like a desert in the dead of night, as the scratchy sounds of a radio being tuned are heard on the soundtrack. Inside the truck, two uniformed agents listen to a news report about an undocumented immigrant wanted for rape and murder in California.

“Police in Santa Maria, California say a man who was in the country illegally is now charged along with another suspect in the rape and deadly attack of a 64-year-old woman,” says the disembodied voice of a broadcast which, according to text on the screen, is “actual audio from CBS Evening News.”

The audio, which appears to have been pulled directly from an August 2015 CBS News report, is the only part of the nearly 3-minute video which is not a dramatization. The video was produced by agents from the Border Patrol’s El Centro Sector, located in Southern California’s Imperial Valley. It has been posted on the El Centro Sector chief’s official Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as the national Border Patrol agency’s official YouTube page, Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Featuring drone footage, suspenseful music and even fake blood, the video, titled “The Gotaway,” a Border Patrol term used to describe illegal border crossers who evade apprehension, shows the agents in dramatic pursuit of a car full of migrants. From the front seat, a menacing Hispanic man with a full sleeve of tattoos (presumably the “coyote” who brought them across the border) orders his passengers in Spanish to “get down,” yelling, “We’re not getting caught today!” The smugglers’ car pulls over and the agents, now with backup, chase the migrants on foot, catching all of them but one. The camera then cuts to a shot of silhouetted man in dark clothing running into what looks like a suburban strip mall, where he skulks in the darkness behind a man talking on a cellphone. Revealing his tattoo-covered arm as he emerges from the shadows, the so-called gotaway asks the other man for money, then pulls out a knife and stabs him in the chest, running off into the darkness as the man lies in the street, fake blood running down his white shirt.

8. Border Patrol Pulls Vid Reflecting How Stephen Miller (Update 9.6.2020)
Sun Sep 6, 2020, 07:00 AM
Sep 2020

The Trump administration’s white supremacist propaganda machine removed a video on Saturday that it had posted earlier in the week. The removal came hours after this story, which has been updated, reported on its use of false migrant crime statistics and a fictionalized story about a dark-skinned migrant murdering a man with a knife.

The video had been uploaded to YouTube on Thursday by Border Patrol, part of the Department of Homeland Security, which did not respond to a request for comment about it on Friday and also did not immediately respond to a request Saturday evening for comment on its removal. According to YouTube, the video, which had been viewed about 1,500 times as of Saturday afternoon, "has been removed by the uploader."

The video had appeared to reflect the influence of Trump’s senior adviser and speechwriter Stephen Miller, who was introduced to white supremacist ideas as a teenager and helped radicalize the Department of Homeland Security by elevating far-right union leaders in 2016, as I report in my book Hatemonger.

Nick Miroff for the Washington Post broke a story that makes me wonder whether the Trump administration could be even more problematic when it comes to immigration.
A fictionalized video, which since the story has been removed from YouTube ("This video has been removed by the uploader&quot , produced by the Border Patrol and posted this week to its YouTube channel shows a Spanish-speaking attacker stabbing and killing a man in a dark alley after escaping from U.S. agents. The video currently can be viewed here.

The three-minute video, titled “The Gotaway,” is produced in the visual style of a television show like Netflix’s series “Narcos,” with aerial drone footage, actors and fake blood. “Gotaway” is the Border Patrol term for an undocumented migrant who evades capture.
The video ends with the image of the stabbing victim bleeding and dying on the ground.

According to the YouTube post, “The Gotaway” was produced by the Border Patrol’s El Centro sector, which includes California’s Imperial Valley. Under Trump, the Border Patrol has expanded its messaging efforts with a strategic communications initiative that has provided video equipment and training to border agents working in the field.
