TALLAHASSEE ― About 180,000 Americans have died during a pandemic. Unemployment hovers above double digits. The incumbent presidents approval ratings are 12 points underwater.
In any other election cycle, Floridas Senate District 20 might be in play for Democrats, the party challenging for a seat long held by Republicans. President Donald Trump won the district, which covers parts of Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk Counties, by eight points in 2016. Thats a substantial margin, but in what many are calling a Democratic-leaning year, not an overwhelming one.
And yet, Kathy Lewis, the Democrat running for the open seat, said she feels her party could be doing more to support her.
Her logic is simple: shes a Black woman running in the Interstate-4 corridor of the countrys largest swing state. She represents a crucial Democratic constituency in a crucial part of the national electoral map.
If we drive our race, we drive Biden, Lewis said. Not helping us to the fullest extent potentially hurts Biden.
One of the states legislative bodies also hangs in the balance. Republicans currently hold a 23-to-17 advantage in the Senate. If Democrats flip three seats, the party could share power with Republicans in the chamber. For the first time in decades, Democrats could help set the legislative agenda in Tallahassee.

(2,065 posts)4 statewide elections of importance. Obama in 2008 and 2012. Bill Nelson won in 2006 and 2012.
We have not had a Democratic Governor since 1998. 22 yeas! Democrats havent had a legislative majority in either chamber since 1996.
Yet this is a purple state?? Yeah, the elections are close but the Democratic leadership here is horrible! Kansas of all places has elected a Democratic Governor more recently than FL in the form of Kathleen Sebelius.
That is why I dont have much faith that Biden will take FL. I have my fingers crossed but the party leaders seldom fail to disappoint.

(6,247 posts)Democrats have to assess those in leadership roles, too.
The I-4 corridor should be a layup for Democrats. Our candidates deserve help.
Florida should be, at the very least, a Purple state.
