Swiss voters rejected the "1:12 initiative" that would have capped executive pay at 12 times more than the lowest paid worker in the company.

Swiss Voters Decisively Reject a Measure to Put Limits on Executive Pay

Corporations and Swiss banks probably threatened to leave or otherwise take revenge if it passed.

The current imbalance would be more justifiable if the grotesquely overpaid executives suffered proportionate punishment when the company does poorly. Instead they tend to float away on their golden parachutes while their underpaid employees stand in the unemployment line.
