Everything broke this weekend.

1) Friday night. Lost my internet. Called internet provider. 15 minute wait for customer service rep. Went through the usual process...unplug your router and modem, then plug them back in, etc. etc. That didn't work. Rep says I need a service call and says he can have someone here on Tuesday. My response: Um, no. I do work from home, and I wear a medical device that depends on the internet.

Rep says he will have local dispatch call me within 30 minutes. I said "No you won't, you guys NEVER call back". Rep says they HAVE to call me back within 30 minutes if a medical issue is involved. I said OK.

No one called. Called another rep. A real enthusiastic guy. "I guarantee you that you will have a tech at your house "tomorrow morning at 930 AM (Saturday). Also, I will personally call you at 1000 AM to see how it is going". I said "promise"? He said yes.

945 on Saturday. No one shows up. Call customer service again. I read the rep my documentation of the phone calls. Someone will call you back within the hour he says. No they won't, I said. Well, someone finally called back and said they would be right over. Tech came and fixed everything. He worked in the upstairs office, I stayed downstairs. While I was sitting there, I was thinking "Jesus, my bong is right next to my modem, and I have a glass pipe and weed on my desk". He came downstairs when he was done and he had a big grin. I said "Ya didn't steal any of my weed, didja"? He laughed and said "No Sir".

2) Sunday, yesterday. mowed my lawn. I have a battery powered mower that I LOVE. It crapped out on me 3/4's of the way through. Did some trouble shooting. Oh shit, electrical problem. Go to youtube. You have to remove about 30 screws, find the bad switch, take it out, and jump some wires. I have no cable or wires in the house to make a jump. Not even any paperclips. Oh wait! This has a 5 year warranty! Oh shit! It will take a month to get repaired and I need a lawn mower. Fuck it, I'll buy a new one, get the old one repaired when I can, then sell it.

Home Depot is the only one who sells this mower. HD online shows that they are out of stock at every HD within 50 miles. So I call HD. On an automated line, I input the SKU number, and the recording tells me there are 4 left in the store. Press the number for a representative. Phone rings over 100 times. Some guy finally answers and I explain that online shows you are out of stock, but your automated phone line says that you have 4 on the shelves. I would like to purchase over the phone with my credit card number. He says he can't do that. I said yes you can. He says they have new machines that you have to physically run the card through. I said no you don't...put me through to a manager please. Phone rings about 200 times this time. Finally I get a manager. He says of course, no problem. He takes my credit card number. I said I'll pick it up curbside in 30 minutes.

I get to the curbside spot. You have to text a number when you arrive. You then get a text back that asks for your order number. I don't have an order number because the manager did not give me one. Had to call the Home depot main number. Another 200 ring job. A friend of mine who works at the customer service desk finally answers the phone. Oh hi Lucky! You here for your mower? Yes, I'm curbside. Please do me a favor and have a big guy bring it out so he can help me load it. Sure! Will do!

Sat in the car and waited 20 minutes. Watched people walk by. Everyone had their mask over their mouth only, not their nose.

Someone finally brings the mower out. A woman in her twenties that weighed about 85 pounds wheeled it out on a cart.

Oh shit, I'm going to have to load it myself. The thing weighs about...I don't know...10,000 pounds. Box is so huge I can't get my arms around it. Finally got it into the vehicle, but not before my spine flew out of my back, shot 100 yards across the parking lot, and smashed someone's headlight.

Went home with no spine and a very sore back. Got the thing out of my vehicle and finished the lawn. Neighbor asked why I was all hunched over. Told him I was Gumby.

The end.

Fortunately my brother and nephew have a lot of experience in fixing such things, but it was a nightmare because this house has a well, and most of the 'in house' plumbing is 52 years old so corrosion was an impediment for this to be as easy as it should have been. I already had the big stuff running beneath the house replaced.

I've been thinking about upgrading the bathrooms but now I see it's might be more difficult of a job than I ever anticipated.

Mon Sep 7, 2020, 12:21 PM

Last week, Friday evening our main house AC wasn't working. Temps around 97 forecast all weekend and into this past week. Called for service, the guy came out (not our usual guy but with a company that trades off emergency service calls with the company we use). The fan blades were completely off the motor that cools the exterior condensor. Fan motor and compressor badly overheated. He put the blades back on, ran water over them, cooled them off, reset everything, and it WORKED!

Randal, the service guy recommended replacing the system as soon as possible. We'd been planning to since it is not as efficient as newer units and is oversized. I just wanted to get through the end of the year before doing it. I talked to the officer manager at our usual company - the ones that would put in a new unit when we get one. She said Randle always recommends replacing the entire unit and not to worry.

This past Friday, the house temp got way too high - the compressor was not coming on. I called our usual company. We agreed it was not worth spending the money to patch this system up again. But no one could come out until Tuesday to estimate size and order the until. At least it has been cooler - only 89-90 all weekend.

We have a second unit for the new addition so that room is set at 68 and we've got fans pushing cool air into the rest of the house. We also have a little window unit we've kept for emergencies like this. It's at the other end of the house in the master bedroom, cooling it and helping a little in the main part of the house. It does not help cool down the upstairs where my husband usually spends his time.

The big worry is that Randal said there are delays in getting new systems. I hope that isn't true.

Oh, the cats do not approve of the window unit at all - it blows air directly on the bed where they usually sleep. Now Lucas is spending his days under the bed where the breeze is not constant. Maya is being friendlier now that she is driven out of the bed. They are both excited that the new part of the house is open to them - we'd shut it off while they were getting to know us and learning their way around. They think that big, almost empty room is a wonderful playground, especially in the middle of the night. Maya loves to go in there and listen to the echoes of her voice - at 3 AM, of course.

Dishwasher started acting so strange before it broke, I thought it was just making up stuff as it went along. It would start a cycle, then never progress to the next cycle. Ran for over 2 hours before I noticed. A few floor tiles in the hall started getting hairline cracks....nothing dropped on them... don't have any idea how this happened...only 11 years old. Knob came off my Koehler kitchen fawcet... just popped off. Shelf in the closet fell down. Lawn mower broke...commercial Husqvarna ...needed a new engine. Perhaps I can answer your question about the floor tiles: The usual cause of such cracks is the house settlement and resulting floor shifting under the tiles. Not much you can do unless it starts to get serious to the point of supporting the floor from underneath.

Good luck with the rest of your gremlins!

I came home Friday evening and pulled the mower out.
First thing I did was mow off a sprinkler head that hadn’t retracted.
Then I rounded the corner of the house to standing water. The backflow preventer had burst and flooded the yard. Home Depot did not have backflow preventers in stock. I thought I would put a temporary fix in place. That was sounded like a great idea at the moment. The next morning I got out of bed to discover low water pressure. The temporary solution did not hold and now I flooded my yard and the neighbors. Run to Home Depot and got a cap. This required getting all the water out of the box so I could glue the cap.

That was Friday and Saturday, Sunday, I was broke, I just didn’t feel like moving all day because I had overdone my restitutions following surgery.

Monday, the car has been needing an oil change, only I change the oil on my cars. Oil change went ok but when I started the car, the serpentine belt came off. How that is related to an oil change I don’t know.

I am done, not doing anything more this holiday!

They really are exasperating. However, to put things in perspective, I finally heard from my very best friend who lives in Lake Charles, Louisiana. It's going to cost them $20K to have all the trees that were uprooted from their yard removed. Her teenager will not be starting school tomorrow because his school was demolished. Her husband's place of employment was also demolished. They are being told it will be weeks before they have power and water. They evacuated to Texas before the hurricane hit but their insurance company will not pay for their costs at a modest hotel.

So, maybe try to look on the bright side that it could always be worse.

i took Friday off to have an extra-long relaxing staycation. might as well have gone in to work.

on Wednesday, we had a new dishwasher delivered, which took 4 weeks to ship, but not installed. on Friday the installer guy came and the dishwasher didn't work. had to bust up our kitchen countertop a bit to get it in, but it's only useful as a dishrack now. and while he was working on it, he must have bumped the kitchen sink hard because the faucet head with the aerator jammed up, so we have no dishwasher and then about 1% water pressure from the sink.

then my dog got sick. she got some really bad diarrhea, kept us up all night with trips to the backyard and rear-end hose washes.

this morning my Android phone died. it's probably going to need a factory reset, and my local data is not backed up so i'm probably going to lose all my contacts, images, and customizations when i do the reset.

on the up-side the faucet head started working better after we had detached it to go to various hardware stores looking for a replacement. there wasn't a replacement but at least we're back to 50% water pressure. this is very helpful as we're doing dishes by hand now. we have barely slept in 3 days.

lame broken weekend. what a waste of time.

Oh, you poor thing. You had a rough couple of days. I hope that your back is better.

I had a similar day on Friday. My car wouldn't start and I had to be at work. It finally started after much cajoling and prayers. I called the mechanic and was told to take it after work. It not only needed a new battery, but a starter too. The people they get their parts from didn't have the starter for my car. They would have to order it. That meant no car until at least Tuesday, if I was lucky. I told the mechanic that I would go to Auto Zone and see if they had it. I had better luck there. I bought the battery and the starter, took it back to the shop and two mechanics worked on fixing the car so that I would have it before they closed. Nice people, they only charged me $80 for labor, plus the $305 for the parts, after $385 I had a working car again.

As Shakespeare would have said, all's well that ends well.

Attack. It turned out our new provider was installing 5g and not doing a good job at it. the good thing about service loss I missed the repub convention and commentaries. It was really kind of peaceful and relaxing. Like a vacation.

It's never fun when items or connections break. I feel your frustration since something similar happened here.

Our power went out this morning at 11 something. Turns out that were several downed power lines and at least one transformer on fire. Eventually, everything got repaired just a few moments ago.
