VP nominee @KamalaHarris has spent the day in #Milwaukee. Right now she is meeting with Black business owners and Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. From the time she hit the tarmac in her chucks, she is has been drawing crowds and excitement. She is a rock star.

(63,221 posts)I knew that she was just what we needed on this ticket. Joe is the senior, measured, down-to-earth veteran and Kamala balances the ticket nicely with her charm, charisma and enthusiasm. They are a great team!

(16,926 posts)Really, after the road BunkerBoy has led the RepubliCon party down, I can't see ANY serious RepubliCon leader even giving him an open door to walk through.
(and I'm not sure Jr. wouldn't walk face-first into the door anyhow.. )

(18,486 posts)Has been doing substantive network and local interviews, did a roundtable with business leaders this afternoon, most of which was also covered live, is getting ready to do another substantive event that the cable networks are monitoring to go live tonight..
Looks to me that they're doing a great job "showcasing the intelligence and gravitas side of her."
And in between those serious events, we're going to enjoy the hell out of seeing the enthusiasm people have for our dynamic, charismatic VP nominee.

(42,770 posts)Saw twice briefly on TV news. One, strolling around her campus and one other interview. Neither demonstrated her presidential gravitas. Do you honestly think that where she went to college and her sorority, although a nice humanizing memory, is gonna attract the voting segment that wants to see a deep understanding of the US economy?

the US economy." If you think that group includes only a certain type of people and they must be prioritized, I can see why your shorts are all in a bunch.
You apparently don't understand the role and importance of HBCUs and Greek organizations in the black community (which go far beyond simply being a "humanizing memory," as you so dismissively call it) and what it means to us to have a candidate with that background. Black voters who are excited and energized by this are just as entitled to have the VP candidate connect with them as any other group has. And appealing to us on that level doesn't mean we're any less interested in "the US economy" than any other group and doesn't take anything away from anyone else. It's not a zero sum game.
But your concern is duly noted, as is your assumption that unless YOU saw it on the news, no one else did and/or it didn't happen.

(42,770 posts)Campaign 101 -
1. Appeal to base - check.
2. Seek out and attract swing voters! - not checked
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)The fact that YOU only saw two small clips last night on the network news broadcasts of Kamala doing something that doesn't interest you doesn't mean that she and the campaign aren't reaching out to swing voters.
Even if you seeing it on television were the determinant of whether they are reaching swing voters (which it isn't since, among other things, most of those voters probably aren't glued to cable news), the networks actually covered quite a bit of Kamala's trip to Wisconsin yesterday, which you seemed to miss altogether.
By most accounts, the campaign is checking the " seek out and attract swing voters" box very effectively. Maybe you should make an effort to find out what the campaign is actually doing before you critique its performance.

(6,147 posts)that the TV station you watched didn't show what you want to see, but it happened.
The TV station picks and chooses... that can't be helped.
Consider going on YouTube and other sites to see more about her visit.
Here is what I found:
https://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/watch/kamala-harris-speaks-to-black-business-owners-in-wisconsin-91224645750
Harris stopped by an IBEW training facility Monday where she spoke with people who train workers there. Her next stop was a meeting with Black business owners from the Milwaukee area, speaking to the attendees for about 45 minutes before recapping their conversations for the press.
She pledged that she and Biden would increase access to capital for small businesses that are the heartbeat of their communities.
What we know about small businesses and small-business leaders is they are not only leaders of business, they are civic leaders. They hire locally, said Harris, who said investing in entrepreneurship would be a priority for the Biden-Harris administration.
We see you. We understand you. We understand the significance of what you are in terms of the health and well-being of communities, Harris said. We see the benefit for the entire country to invest in our small businesses and small-business leaders.
Apparently, black voters in Wisconsin were not out in full force in 2016 the way they were in 2012, so the base DOES need to be energized.
You need to trust that the campaign knows what it's doing. And that what it chooses as places to go and events to have will be good for the campaign.
I'm sorry that your TV station didn't make you happy.

(18,486 posts)There is an unfortunate propensity among some here to take black voters for granted and assume that any attempt to reach out to us is not only a waste of time, but is somehow a slight against "swing voters" (we know what that means) who should be courted vigorously, consistently, and, apparently, exclusively.
Of course, when their candidate loses, they're the first to blame black voters for not jumping through hoops and standing in 5-hour lines to vote. And then they insist that next time, campaigns must try even harder to attract those "swing voters" by further dissing black voters whose "box has already been checked" ...
qwlauren35
(6,147 posts)then B/H needs to swing by and pick up that 5%.
She came.
- she was pro-Union
- she was pro-BLM
- she was pro-black business
- she was pro-small business
Sounds like a worthwhile trip to me.
It reminds me of a Lincoln Project ad that seemed so irrelevant. And it had people on Facebook getting all teary eyed. Someone in advertising said "It's targeted". It's meant to appeal to certain people. Well, if that's okay for Lincoln Project, then I say let's give Harris some time to show her stuff, and not fly off the handle over her first visit.
I trust the campaign to put her where she needs to be.
StarfishSaver
(18,486 posts)But I think some of the "she's not reaching out to swing voters" consternation is based less on any objective reality and more on ignorance of and maybe even disdain for black history and culture.
And if that's where you're coming from, it's easy to get hung up thinking that a black woman connecting with black voters through her proud and happy embrace of her alma mater and sorority is just a frivolous sideshow because it doesn't directly involve or cater to white people, and totally miss what a beautiful, resonant, powerful political moment that it actually represents.

(18,486 posts)That's hilarious from someone who just a few posts ago was insisting that the campaign needs to focus on a particular "voting segment."
It's pretty clear you're not all that concerned about "the entire voting population" but want to be sure that a certain "voting segment" is always the center and priority - and it really pisses you off when the campaign makes an effort to appeal to anyone else with a message that doesn't center around that particular segment.

(24,728 posts)a rock star.
But we got one with smarts, values, class.
Who was the smart one on Biden's team to see that Kamala's starpower is what was needed to offset drumpf's faux celebrity? I didn't articulate it like that, but in the talks of Rice and Bass (though not Warren....) I felt such letdown, and now I know why!!
Also really happy to have a woman of color on our ticket!
Swoon!!!
