Is there a German version?

I would lose a spleen with that.

My wife did recognize the melody, but I think most Germans would not, and making German rhyme to songs written in English is not a task I'd want to be burdened with!

I did wrote this, but didn't perform it. My collaborator of The Parody Project did both the music and the video. T wrote the text on Sunday, sent it to Don that evening, and he had the finished product by Tuesday evening, German time. I couldn't believe it. Granted, he is a seasoned professional, but I think he must be like Stevie Wonder, who gets into a studio goes into a zone, and loses all track of time. How he could take my lyrics and transform them into both a completed music track, AND a presentable video in less than 48 hours is beyond me.

But I do have immense fun with it. Wy back in the dawn of time, I used to tour as a solo musician, and then with some Dutch friends playing Celtic and Appalachian folk music. The real word, as well as the need to make a living to support a family, intervened. Anybody can be a starving musician, but a wife and children change the perspective on one's responsibilities.

My dad was a past president of the Gridiron Club of Washington, who did this kind of thing once a year in front of POTUS and assorted dignitaries. The songs performed there are supposed to be written only by members of the music committee of Gridiron, although after my dad passed, one of the members asked me to write some numbers for them. I know that at least one of my songs was performed in front of Bush and Cheney, but I wasn't there to see it. When my dad is President of Gridiron, and Clinton is POTUS, THEN we fly over to the States for the weekend. When it's Bush and Cheney, I do NOT!! My dad was a very prominent member of the Washington print press at the time, and his shoes were, in my judgment, way too big for me to fill, so I went in a completely different direction. However, I did maintain many of his political connections, as well as enjoying hanging with major figures of the time that he used to hang with.

I learned the parody skills at the feet of the master (my father). On the other hand, our collaborator (Parody Project) who did the video IS a professional, with several awards for video work under his belt. He is an accomplished musician as well. I content myself with having fun at this, although I have gotten involved in heavier situations as well (once did a piece for The Nation).

I sometimes got to come along to Capitol Hill or the White House. My dad was there every day. I occasionally got to meet Presidents, Governors, members of Congress, other prominent journalists. My dad met or spoke with them every day. If they thought his perspective on some issue would help him, THEY were the ones who came out to OUR house on weekends to discuss it. To me, it was Senator Church, Senator Javits, Senator Kennedy. To him, it was Frank, Jake and Bob. THAT was the guy with an interesting life.

Once, when pancreatic cancer was eating him up and he was just a couple of months before death, he saw that there was a proposal to cut Medicare costs by deleting outpatient hospital visits from being covered by Medicare at 95% and reducing that to 85%. With some of the last of his ebbing strength, he managed to arrange a conference call from his bed at his house in Virginia, the White House, and Senator Moynihan of New York. Being a frequent patient himself in those days, he pointed out to them that if Medicare was going to reduce coverage of outpatient visits, then people would just check into hospitals for overnight stays at the higher coverage, and cost the government way MORE money, instead. The people at the other ends of the phones were all going OMG, he's right, and buried the proposal that same afternoon. Not too many members of the press had THAT kind of pull or respect. Like I said before, shoes way too big for me to fill.
