I usually never start OPs, but mysteriously there seems to be no discussion of this anywhere on DU that I can find in search or casual perusal of the likely boards.
Randall Terry, founder of the rabid anti-choice group Operation Rescue, has entered the Democratic primary (I think just in Kansas, but that's all it takes). Apparently he has been planning this for at least a year. His intention is not to pursue the presidency, but to force networks to air his ads, which contain graphic pictures of supposedly aborted fetuses, with the ultimate aim of airing such an ad during the Super Bowl.
As a random citizen, networks are free to refuse to air Terry's ads, much like CBS refused to air a gay dating site's ad during last year's Super Bowl. But as a presidential candidate, federal law prevents FCC-licensed stations from refusing to run his ad if they air ads for any other presidential candidate.
So far, this sick gambit appears to be working. One of his ads just appeared during the Pittsburgh vs. Denver game.

(25,453 posts)You'd think he might spend a bit more if he's going to fork over the money to advertise during the superbowl. Also like how he asks for your vote in the "Democrat Primary"...
