Trump is always impressed by fame and influence, and Woodward is probably one of the most famous and influential writers out there, and being a narcissist and an idiot he probably thought he could charm Woodward enough to bring him over to his side, so Woodward would be "nice" to him in his upcoming book. But that's not how Bob rolls; Trump was a big fat fool (quelle surprise) for speaking on the record to any reporter, let alone Woodward.
