The U.S. Postal Services Board of Governors signaled strong support for Louis DeJoy on Wednesday after convening a closed-door meeting with the embattled postal chief to discuss congressional investigations tied to the agencys delivery problems and allegations of political fundraising improprieties.
Congressional Democrats called for DeJoys ouster after he pushed through aggressive cost-cutting policies that nonpartisan experts and rank-and-file postal workers say caused multiday mail backlogs in communities across the country. The slowdowns have raised concerns about the agencys ability to handle an expected avalanche of mailed ballots for the November election.
Others, including Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.), on Monday called on the board of governors to suspend DeJoy pending an investigation by Maloneys committee into claims that he reimbursed employees for campaign contributions they made to his preferred GOP politicians.
The move came a day after The Washington Post reported allegations that DeJoy and his aides urged employees at New Breed Logistics, his former North Carolina-based supply-chain logistics company, to write checks and attend fundraisers on behalf of Republican political candidates. Five people who worked for New Breed told The Post that DeJoy pressured them to contribute to DeJoys favored political causes and later reimbursed them with company bonuses, actions that would violate state and federal law.

This is a project of the party, not just spanky.
Most members of the U.S. Postal Services board of governors, who were responsible for selecting Louis DeJoy as postmaster general, have numerous ties to the Republican Party as well as to President Donald Trumps associates and administration.
According to a CNBC review of public documents and disclosures, five of the six members of the board, including Chairman Robert Duncan, are linked to GOP and Trump circles through various campaign, legal and financial connections.
DeJoy himself was a prolific fundraiser for Trump and the Republican Party before he landed the top USPS job in June. The board members were all appointed by Trump.
