4 Cops in George Floyd Killing May Be Turning On Each Other
Former officers are seeking separate trials
Four ex-cops charged in the death of George Floyd appeared in court in Minneapolis on Fridaybut they would rather be apart. The four menincluding Derek Chauvin, who knelt on the Floyd's neck for eight minutes as he struggled to breatheare blaming each other for Floyd's death and seeking separate trials, the Washington Post reports. Chauvin's lawyer says the veteran officer was assisting an arrest already in progress, while lawyers for J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane say the rookies deferred to Chauvin. The fourth officer, Tou Thao, has told investigators he was focused on controlling bystanders.

(115,280 posts)Any lawyer representing any of the three besides Chauvin would have done the same. Chauvin, however, doesn't have much to go on when he tries to assign blame to the two rookies.

(11,095 posts)Chauvin overrode questions (and concern?) expressed -- clearly indicated he was making the calls -- and it would be absolutely derelict for any defense lawyer not highlight this as a critical feature in the case.

(34,661 posts)the Judge hearing this case ordered the County Attorney and some of his Staff Lawyers off the case.. So is that move important? Don't know, but, suspect the Body Politic was just knee capped. Hopefully there is no miss trial or Hung Jury, this is of National importance.

(115,280 posts)According to the court brief, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and several of the assistant attorneys "are potential witnesses due to their interviews of Hennepin County Medical Examiner Dr. Andrew Baker, regarding his autopsy of George Floyd without having a non-attorney witness present."
As a result, the judge has decided Freeman and those assistant attorneys are off the case, KSTP's Callan Gray reports. The judge has not disqualified other attorneys or staff members from the Hennepin County Attorney's Office from the case.
It was entirely proper under the rules relating to lawyers who might be called as witnesses, and the lawyers should have known better. Other lawyers in the prosecutor's office are still on the case and it is still being overseen by Keith Ellison.
