It is not about Trump although he is all of those things. 85% + of Republicans support him.

Democrats should focus on turnout and motivating the base

Same bullshit they did with torture.

As in: Trump didn't lie. He chose a "policy" of de-escalation. Working behind the scenes to mitigate the pandemic while presenting a public face that would not alarm the population or influence the markets.

Of course the above example of a possible future comment is complete bullshit.

Yeah, yeah. I could do this for a living. I know. I choose integrity, honesty, and decency instead. I choose my humanity.

The same will be done with Trump.

They'll call it policy. It will be framed as "critics" of Trump's response say he lied. His "critics" are criminalizing politics. You can't criminalize "policy". Yada, yada, yada.

The Convention Against Torture entered into US Code in 1994. Albeit with some reservations. Still, torture was illegal before Bush took office. It remained illegal the entire time he was in office. Until it was renamed enhanced interrogation techniques and later called "policy differences". Then, somehow, torture wasn't torture anymore. USA! USA! USA!

Bush had Yoo.

Trump has Yoo. His has most of the same Republicans in Congress who excused torture. His base is made up of Americans who cheered torture. Trump has Bill Barr, so he doesn't need all the DOJ worker-thugs Bush had.

Those monsters have always been there. Same waiting in the wings for their return. Some simply waiting for their moment to strike hard. But they are always there.

Currently, they are holding a lot of power. They also have the arrogance to push that power beyond what many would term normal. The wave of ignorance, arrogance, and naked brutality is crushing America. But that wave didn't start with Trump.

We knew a Trump-like figure was coming once Bush and the rest got away with their crimes. Doesn't mean we deserve what is happening. Does mean that if we are given another chance to stop the onslaught, we should.

I'm hoping it's different this time.

But, the "policy differences", or along those lines, is the route they'll take given the chance.

Apparently you can do pretty much anything if you write the laws, enforce the laws, and judge the laws accordingly.
