https://www.oregonlive.com/environment/2020/09/opal-creek-icon-george-atiyeh-missing-in-beachie-creek-fire-zone.htmlGeorge Atiyeh, the reluctant icon of Oregons environmental movement for his central role in saving Opal Creek from clear-cutters, has gone missing after the Beachie Creek fire roared down the Little North Fork of the Santiam River and burned his house to the ground.
No one has seen Atiyeh, 72, since before the fire, according to friends and relatives.
The same fire that wiped out Atiyehs house also has hit his beloved Opal Creek, the federally protected landscape known for its enormous, ancient trees and crystallin pools. Though its impossible to get access at this point, the stream and surrounding forest that made the site one of the states premier hiking destinations, are in the fire zone.
*snip*
Opal Creek Wilderness is a truly special place. Ive been checking the Friends of Opal Creeks website to see if Opal Creek survived. They just dont know yet.
This guy though, would be a loss. I met him a couple of times. What he did to save the area is amazing. Ill be very sad if he died in this.

This is what some believe hell is like--but right here on our West Coast. I started to read a story about a boy found dead with his dog in his lap huddled in a car and couldn't finish. There really are no words--just shock.

I read the article. Saw the picture of the place he was protecting. Profoundly beautiful. It's no wonder he fought so hard to save it.
