This DUer is running for state senate, in part to elect US Congresswoman in extremely tight race and all Democrats up and down ballot.
This is a challenging year to be running. In non-Covid times, I would be canvassing and holding fundraising and vote gaining events. Our Governor and state Democratic Party is suggesting we not be walking and knocking on doors .so our campaign works with our local Democratic Party of Otero County DPOC for other methods. Even with volunteers for phone banking, all other efforts cost money that I cant get from holding events so Im pleading for DU support. DUer Omaha Steve inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and run for office and has been an amazing help and resource. Im asking other DUers to run for office, especially if they are in a Republican/Red area. Think about what you would do differently, what you would replicate.
This is where we are now:
DPOC has committed to do the following projects in the next two months:
POSTCARD PROJECT: printed both sides, 6" x 6" postcards, gloss cover w/maiing services and postage, wording will include: "Otero County Democratic Party". Draft of proposed postcard attached for your information.
* Distribution: 24,500 mailboxes in Otero County, printed and mailed by last week of September (prior to beginning of absentee voting)
*sizes: 6" x 6" or 8" x 10", dependent on amount of donations received by Sept. 15th.
*Donation sources: National, state, and county campaigns; DPOC ($1000); large donors; and DPOC active members
*Amount needed: $8500 - $9500.
We are asking for your help in this project!
Other projects being implemented:
Digital Billboard: new digital billboard is located on Margo's (1st Street across from Walmart). Will begin running 4 weeks prior to election through Election Day. DPOC is funding this project in the amount of $2000 for 4 spots; each spot is on screen 7 -8 seconds every 6-7 minutes. all screens will use the wording: "Otero County Democratic Party"
* 1 spot = "VOTE BLUE" on blue background
* 1 spot = 1 photo of national candidates per screen, rotating 3 within spot
* 2 spots = photos of local candidates (state and county), 2 pix per screen, rotating all 8 within each spot
Information Distribution:
* Office will be open, staffed by volunteers beginning Sept. 21st, Monday through Saturday, 10 - 4. Office is located at 1019 Madison
Traditionally, the office is also made available to candidates for canvassing, phone banking, etc.
* Signs - receiving and distributing campaigns' signs to public
* Informational flyers - we maintain flyers/brochures in the office, available to the public, including copies of Constitution, flyer explaining contrasts of Democratic and Republican platforms, stats, etc.; maps of all state, county, city and national districts in Otero County including names of representatives with contact information; voting information; and any brochures given to us by the candidates.
* Voter Registration: (in the past month, 40 voter registrations have been delivered to the County Clerk)
*Candidate Information Brochure (attached)
* Supporting local candidates with volunteer phone banking, advertising; and holding a rehearsal zoom meeting and scheduling a virtual public Candidate Forum set for September 25th
* Access provided to folks to voting by driving them to polls
* Training and implementing poll watchers/challengers
* Actively recruiting Democrat candidates to run on the ballot in order to encourage and boost Democratic voting in Otero County

(4,110 posts)I feel like I was in training for a marathon and I can see the flag ahead.
These are the nitty gritty details of a campaign.
Im hoping more DUers run in the future and we continue to give support to every DUer who steps up and runs. I know I couldnt have made it without my DU family. I NEVER thought Id run for office and hope Im getting others to think about running.

(4,110 posts)We need local candidates in all races, especially the rural, the red, those districts where Democrats quit running because only republicans have been elected for decades.
