SD: Family speaks out after man killed in crash involving Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg (R)

Victor Nemec knew something was wrong when he went to pick up his cousin Joe Boever Sunday morning at his home in Highmore.

The two had planned to go fix Boever's truck, which had been damaged when Boever hit a hay bale in the ditch the night prior. But when Nemec arrived, Boever's house was unlocked with all the lights on.

His cousin was nowhere to be found. Concerned, Nemec called the Hyde County Sheriff.

Twelve hours later, he and his brother Nick Nemec were in a Highmore funeral home identifying Boever's body.

Boever, 55, was killed in an accident late Saturday involving South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.

Few details of the crash have been released, but Gov. Kristi Noem Sunday evening said during a news conference in Sioux Falls that Ravnsborg had been involved in a fatal wreck. It's unclear if charges against the attorney general are coming or if anyone else was involved in the incident. The investigation is ongoing and being led by the Highway Patrol.

But in Victor Nemec's eyes, it's a simpler story.

“The attorney general hit my cousin as he was walking down the side of the road and killed him,” he said.

Insurance company, yes. But 911?
Makes me wonder if this guy was establishing an alibi while ignoring that the victim could still be alive.

I had never hit an animal like that before while driving, so I called 911 and told them where I hit it -- it was actually in a relatively urban part of Virginia -- in case they wanted to send police or someone out there to check to make sure it wasn't blocking the road or running around injured or whatever it may be. They asked me if I wanted to send police out to file a police report, but I told them, no, that would be okay since I basically just hit his backside while he was dashing across the road and didn't think I did any serious damage to my car.

I just find it difficult to believe that this guy did anything besides cover his own ass.

In Northern Virginia. It was early in the morning (0530 or so) and I honestly didn't know if it was a deer or a person until I went back to double check. Thankfully it was not a person. But this guy sounds different.

Sodak Pol being involved with a Traffic Fatality. Remember the Governor who blew a Stop Sign at 60+ and hit a Motorcycle? That story had more twists and turns than a pretzel.

It was not clear whether Druce, a four-term legislator, planned to return to his Chalfont home. He released a five-paragraph statement Monday through Costoupolous, saying he was "truly sorry for his actions" and had made a "terrible mistake by not taking immediate responsibility for the accident" that killed Kenneth Cains on July 27, 1999.

"Although the state police ruled the accident was "unavoidable' since Mr. Cains stepped onto the roadway and into the path of my car," Druce said in the statement, "I have no excuse for not stopping near the scene and reporting the accident to police."

Druce went on to say that as an elected state lawmaker, he had a "higher responsibility to abide by the law," and lying about the accident "breached that sacred trust."

"I again offer my sincere apology to the Cains family for the tragic loss of their brother," Druce said. "I also apologize to my family and friends, the people I represented in Bucks County and to my former colleagues for what I did and what I failed to do after the accident."
