No weapons ban at the Michigan Capitol. For now, at least.

LANSING — Michigan Capitol Commissioners failed to pass two proposals to ban or limit weapons at the Capitol on Monday, meaning guns continue to be allowed inside the building.

Armed protesters entered the Capitol during a demonstration against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's coronavirus shutdowns in late April. Since then, the commission charged with overseeing the Capitol grounds has grappled with whether they should act.

On Monday, Commissioner Joan Bauer called for a total weapons ban, which would have allowed security, law enforcement and legislators to carry guns but prohibited armed members of the public from coming inside. Only Bauer and commissioner Kerry Chartkoff supported it.

Second was a proposal from Commissioner William Kandler to ban the open carry of weapons. It failed with a tie vote, 3-3, with Kandler the only one switching sides.

the courthouse to pay a parking ticket.

How expensive is it to tell them to leave their guns outside?

Currently, none are installed at any entrance to the building. Anyone can walk in with anything.

Or they don't want the money to pay for it to come out of their budget. Either way, they want or need the legislature to cover it, and the expense is a great excuse for the GOP to not act on it.

Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that citizens armed to the teeth are safe. Those who are not, aren't.
