When I click to rec, I now get this popup:
Is this happening to anyone else?
on edit: I'm on Windows 10, and my browser is Edge, probably "classic crappy Edge", per Tommymac

(25,428 posts)California is one, as I recall. Most websites are showing it to everyone since it's easier than trying to link it geographically.

(10,667 posts)So I'll guess it's just classic crappy Edge.

(7,263 posts)Same open source code repackaged, much less invasive and runs most Chrome apps.
Old one was proprietary code and it frankly sucks. Around 4% market penetration over it's lifetime. MS made a huge mistake replacing IE with that browser.
That's why they went out and used the Chrome open source code to emulate one of the world's most used browsers.
You can upgrade for free on MS site. But if you like what you have by all means keep using it. It is fairly secure and private.
On topic I have had no issues either. Running new Edge and Chrome on latest Windows 10 build.
If you must know I disclose I am a MS professional - made a lifetime living keeping windows server's running. It's not perfect, but it is good no matter what those Mac and Linux folk say.

(22,462 posts)I bet they are trying it again.
We need more security measures

(86,330 posts)But I just logged in.
Other annoying stuff has been ha[[ening like when I click on "post my comment" and nothng happens. I click again and I get the "you tried to post twice" error page. But the comment does show up when I go back to the OP.
Also, when I click on "REC" it takes a while to show up, or it does nothing. Second click and the whole icon thing disappears.
Odd.

I don't think these messages are anything sinister at all. I expect the admins have made some changes to comply with regulations in different jurisdictions.

(7,222 posts)I'm in the UK and haven't seen the message the OP mentions, so maybe it's been made region-specific in some ways.

(25,428 posts)Incoming IP address can generally be used for that, though VPNs and other anonymizers can spoof IP addresses.
It's much harder to filter by individual states within the US, so they're probably doing some high-level filtering (by country), but not trying to target specific states, etc.
I'm in Texas and I've seen it on dozens of sites.

(21,935 posts)I just tried reccing this thread on Windows 10 Firefox, Chrome, and Edge (the new one), and Mobile Safari, and I did not get a popup as described. If someone could PM or email me a screenshot that would be helpful, thanks.
After reading the thread, are the only people experiencing this issue located in California by any chance? I have no idea why this is appearing on the rec button, but we will look into it.
On edit: my guess is that this is another issue related to the ad platform change we did a couple of months back. We had some unexpected bugs during the switchover and this could be one of them. It could be related to the California law mentioned upthread, but if so it shouldn't be showing up on the rec button, nor should it be showing up for Star Members. Will update you when we have some more info...
gristy
(10,667 posts)Yeah, I'm in CA.

(21,935 posts)Does it show up every time you rec, or did it just show up once and then go away?

Every time I rec.
EarlG
(21,935 posts)I'm pretty confident that this is related to our ad platform. But it looks like a bug -- nothing malicious. We're looking into it and will let you know.
