Even MLB does acknowledge the Black Lives Matter movement.
But hockey has been the most hostile, despite hiring Black executives.
Is it the coaches/GMS, players, or the culture?

(755 posts)They are some white athletes that speak on the issue, but they get blowback from some white coaches, etc.

(10,156 posts)It caused a drop in our season tickets and I was on there. We don't want you racists anyway. Go watch stock car racing! Its more simple than hockey since you have to know how that game works.

(6,853 posts)The players are almost 100% white as are the viewers. Neither the players nor the viewers are pushing for justice. Racial inequality does not affect them.

(31,261 posts)You are wrong, but that is acceptable given that Hockey is like 99% White (though two of the best players are Black and a third top player is an Arabic Muslim).

To a degree not seen before, players are kneeling for the United States national anthem and speaking out publicly on fighting racism, with backing from the National Hockey League.

(31,261 posts)And Brad Marchand is one of the most outspoken people in Sports on the need for social justice, he doesnt seem to see society functioning much longer without social justice issues being resolved.

(17,376 posts)Im watching right now. All of the leagues big stars issued statements and spoke out in support racial justice, some big name players even attended protest events. They suspended play for two days in solidarity. One of the players, Matt Dumba, gave an impassioned speech on national tv prior to the first game back from the virus pause.
There is still a long way to go, and the newly formed Hockey Diversity Alliance is keeping the NHLs feet to the fire. But I largely call BS on your characterization of the sport.

(6,390 posts)Sure most players and fans are white. And a good chunk of them are foreign...from Canada, Sweden, Russia, Slovania, Norway, etc. To be realistic, they are probably more concerned about their native countries issues than the USA, and they would be right.
It's also the only sport (NHL) where either the US or Canadian anthem is played depending on the venue. Unlike American Football, etc. the NHL is an international sport practiced mostly by North American players and European who want a bigger paycheck. I distinctly remember the "Detroit Five", main line of the Red Wings....all Russian players and they dominated. Most nations without significant snowfall don't participate. Sure, Jamaica has put forward a bobsled team for the Olympics, they are the exception and not the rule. So, why do you expect foreign citizens to kneel at the anthem when the anthem isn't even their country. Having been to a number of hockey games, they just stand in respect...real easy to discern who is a foreign player vs. US.
Oh and there are more players of African descent in the NHL as of late....majority from Canada.

(4,667 posts)Most people dont realize that the NHL is not really an American Sport.
The majority of players are NOT from the United States. Many of the players are from Canada and Russia.
American culture and influence is going to be the least influential in the NHL because quite frankly, its just not very pro-American. Most of the players have allegiances to other countries.
Americans dont play hockey. By the numbers, we really dont watch it either.

(31,261 posts)The starting Center for the Boston Bruins (Canadian) has been very vocal about the need for social justice and an end to police violence now. A player in the Western Bubble lead a similar effort there.

Kaepernick didn't vote and equated Hillary with the buffoon.
I saw an interview with a player on my hometown pro football team saying he just wasn't "brought up" to vote. Many of them don't care.
I have no idea who that kid in your post is lol. A sports star? That million is going to go fast.
