Deputy fired over Florida school massacre to get job back

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff’s deputy who was fired for his inaction during a school shooting that left 17 dead has been reinstated with back pay by an arbitrator who ruled that the sheriff missed a deadline for dismissing the deputy.

An arbitrator ruled this week that Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony acted 13 days too late when he fired deputy Josh Stambaugh last year for his conduct during the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

State law says discipline against law enforcement officers must occur within 180 days of an investigation's completion. It is unknown exactly how much Stambaugh will receive in back pay, but he earned more than $150,000 in 2018, including overtime.

It is the second time an arbitrator has reinstated a Broward deputy fired for his conduct during the Parkland shooting. Another arbitrator reinstated Sgt. Brian Miller four months ago, saying Tony had missed that deadline by two days. The sheriff's office is appealing the Miller decision and says it will do the same with Stambaugh.

5. Then he shouldn't have taken the job at a school since most shootings are AR-15/AK-47 related.

8. Sort of agree. But mainly because he didn't know where the shooter was, whether there was more

than one, whether he'd kill innocent students if he went running in blind, etc. Wish the situation had been different.

Impossible. I hear from cop humpers everywhere that police are barely paid a cent, selfless civil servant types, you know?

Was this guy seriously detailed to guard a school for $150,000 a year, and then didn't even actually, like, guard the fucking school?

Our policing system is a shambles.

7. I went to school with a cop who retired at 55. He still works as a security guard, but he did well

enough with our local PD to get out when he wanted. I wouldn't say they are overpaid, just that many other people deserve to be paid a lot closer to what those guys get.

6. I didn't hold that inaction against him. The military deals with that all the time. They get guys

trained up for combat but never know how well they will do until they get in a fire fight. Even the most gung ho dude in training can freak out and hide when it happens. They should not keep him on duty as he was though.
