A police officer in Bartow, Florida has resigned after he admitted to calling a gay man whod called for assistance a fuc*ing fa**ot.
Interim Chief Bryan Dorman stated he would have fired Officer Timothy Daughtry had he not stepped down from his position, reports The Ledger.
Daughtry was responding to a call from Tyron Smith, the program manager of the George Harris Youth Shelter. A 12-year-old boy with a history of unruly behavior had pulled the fire alarm at the shelter when there was no fire, a first-degree misdemeanor, and administrators wanted him to face consequences.
---snip---
That made me upset, Daughtry said during the followup interview. I said, well thats fg bullshit, you know. I said shut the fk up. At that point, Sarge told me to be quiet and to walk away to get in the car. And as I was walking away, I said, Fg ft and then I got in my vehicle.
Daughty defended his use of the slur as just a term that Ive used growing up, throughout life. Its no different than if I was to say Well thats gay. Its not, its just a term for disdainment, for a particular situation.

Gee the defense of "it's not really homophobic, just a slam on someone", I could swear I have seen that "defense" somewhere. Hmmm...

(52,155 posts)it is very hard to fire cops as has been amply demonstrated in several high profile recent cases. I can see a city wanting to be sure he is gone.

(52,155 posts)Daughtry is the third officer at Bartow Police Department to leave amid allegations of making derogatory statements. In March 2017, Christine Arribas was fired for reasons stemming from a 2016 Facebook post referencing President Barack Obama and a gorilla that had died at a zoo. The post read: This year we lost two gorillas. One is in heaven, and one is moving out of the White House. One will be missed, one will not be.
Arribas was terminated after State Attorney Brian Haas said he would not accept her testimony in criminal trials because of the racist comment.
In February, Michael Bennett abruptly retired amid allegations that he used a racial slur at the police station with other officers nearby. He initially was reprimanded for the incident, but resigned days later after Rev. Clayton Cowart, a civil rights activist in Winter Haven, filed a complaint about the matter.

Now, what kind of psychological test can we give public servants so we can weed out this level of ignorance out of the hiring process?

The problem is the unions protect them, and they just move from one dept/locality to another.
If they are truly 'bad apples' then all of the 'good' police should join hands with the reformers. If they don't it proves they're aligned with the 'bad apples' and hold the same mindset.
