TX-21: Wendy Davis and Chip Roy differ over coronavirus response
Democrat Wendy Davis said Wednesday that U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, a Hays County Republican, holds “dangerous” views on the coronavirus pandemic that have put Texans’ lives at risk. Roy countered that Davis would rather govern by “the very panic and hysteria” that has compromised her constituents’ mental and economic well-being.
“He has demonstrated that he is dangerous and cannot be trusted to look out for the interests of Texas families and Texas businesses,” Davis said in a Zoom interview with members of the American-Statesman editorial board considering an endorsement in the race to represent the 21st Congressional District. It was the candidates’ first joint appearance.
The district includes parts of Central and South Austin, as well as San Antonio and six Hill Country counties.
“This is a serious time, and it calls for serious solutions,” said Davis, a former state senator and gubernational candidate, speaking from her home in Austin. “And one of those, of course, is to start by listening to public health experts and following their guidance, unlike my opponent who has dangerously shown a disregard for that very advice. Instead, we need to be following it, keeping people as healthy as possible so that our economy can reopen.”
Davis said Roy’s approach is “we ought to just force the doors wide open, allow people to infect each other through this theory of herd immunity without a vaccine, which by the way experts have said would take the lives of 20,000 people in the Austin area alone.”
