EPA approves Pine-Sol to kill coronavirus on surfaces

Pine-Sol has approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) “for kill claims against SARS-Cov-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, on hard non-porous surfaces,” according to a company news release.

The common household cleaner, a product of Clorox Company, was tested by a third-party laboratory and proved to be effective against the virus with a “10-minute contact time on hard non-porous surfaces.”

The company recommends using Pine-Sol Original Multi-Surface Cleaner at full strength with a clean sponge or cloth on hard, nonporous surfaces. For wet surfaces, let stand 10 minutes, and then rinse.

For the full list of products that meet EPA’s criteria for use against the COVID-19 virus here:

When I first started in dentistry in 1979, there was an office in South Philadelphia they didn’t sterilize instruments but used to soak them in Lestoil.

Don’t worry, this guy is long dead. Life was fairly primitive back then to tell you the truth. That is not the strangest thing that I’ve had happen within my professional sphere in the last 45 years.

I love the smell of original Pine-Sol, but everybody else in our house groans and fusses whenever I use it.

Only indirectly related to the OP, but I found the Wikipedia article, on the history and different formulations, interesting.

As of 2018, Pine-Sol can be found on store shelves with an ingredient label stating "Contains Pine Oil" but this is not listed as an active ingredient.

Pine oil in modern Pine-Sol seems to be added for fragrance only ...

I can't smell Pine-Sol without having flashbacks to KP duty at Camp Manistee in the early 1970s. No thank you!

It would usually work to keep the smell down for about an hour. But people assumed it was urine and got grossed out.

.

And note, that for it to be effective, it must be wet for 10 minutes without drying.
