Rain Brings Fire Relief in Oregon, but Raises Mudslide Concern

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Oregon early Friday morning provided some relief to one of the states hardest hit by wildfires that have killed 35 people and burned more than 7 million acres across the West.

The rain helped put down fires and improve air quality in Oregon, where eight people have died and several small towns have been destroyed. But the rain also brought new risks. State officials and the National Weather Service warned of flash flooding and landslides, particularly where fires have charred hillsides.

“A storm event coming in today will bring welcome moisture. Winds and lightning strikes are still a concern, but the rain is a welcome sight,” Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said Thursday night.

Smoke is slowly clearing out around Interstate 5, the main highway along the West Coast. according to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. Portland and the state capital of Salem were still recording unhealthy levels of smoke as of Friday morning, however.

This is so depressing. I'm having trouble fathoming the magnitude of the devastation. . . And all the consequences we'll be seeing.
