No point rushing it through before the election as keeping the issue open will energize the GOP base.
I have a lot of respect for RBG, but she really fucked the country over by not retiring during Obama's second term.

I can't remember the makeup of the senate 2013 - 2015 but I would bet McConnell would have moved mountains to stop Obama replacing anyone.

(4,607 posts)Besides, let's be honest, she didn't have to wait till his last year, she was already 80 when he got reelected. She should have retired the day after he won reelection.

(3,282 posts)she should have retired then. She had already survived cancer by that point.

(19,966 posts)The theory I posted in another thread:
She planned to retire in 2016 so Obama could appoint a replacement. She didn't know Moscow Mitch had an evil trick up his sleeve.
Scalia died in February 2016 and Moscow Mitch killed the process with his (unconstitutional?) "election year" appointment bullshit. After that she knew he wouldn't let Obama appoint anyone else and she would have to try to make it through another 4 years.

(16,843 posts)in which a reporter asked him point blank if he would have replaced a liberal justice with a Republican President in office. He said, without even thinking about it, that he would. The reporter asked him how he could justify that and he said that it was all about gaining and holding on to power. Those weren't his exact words, but it's close.
That's just how McConnell is. You can't expect him to do the honorable thing unless you have some blackmail on him or you have something he wants more to trade for the USSC seat. McConnell makes me believe in time travel, because I think he went back in time to teach Machiavelli lessons.

(1,261 posts)You can tell from the nonstop project. Trump is always whining about rigged scams and hoaxes (lies) and they're his primary M.O. McConnell calls everything a Power Grab in the same way.

If Republicans retain the Senate or there is only a small Democratic majority in the next Congress, you can count on McConnell confirming Barrett in the lame duck.

(4,607 posts)If we win both Houses, Schumer needs to make it clear to McConnell that if he goes ahead during the lame duck session, then Dems will abolish the filibuster entirely and pack the Court.
We're literally down to the nuclear deterrent.
