Fundraiser to Defeat Mitch McConnell Raises $13 Million Overnight After Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Death

Sat, September 19, 2020, 9:51 AM PDT·3 mins read
A fundraiser to defeat Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell in the Kentucky Senate race has raised over $13 million overnight and continues to rapidly increase since the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Update 4:00 PM: Since publishing at 9:51 AM PT, the campaign has now raised over $17 million from nearly 200,000 donors.

McConnell vowed hours after the Supreme Court Justice’s death that President Trump’s replacement nominee would get a vote on the Senate floor. Trump followed that up on Saturday morning, telling the GOP that they have an “obligation, without delay,” to select a new Supreme Court justice. It was not clear when McConnell intended to hold the new vote.

The campaign called “Get Mitch or Die Trying” is led by ActBlue, a non-profit that funds left-leaning and progressive groups. Donations to the campaign are split among candidates in races in key swing states where Republicans are defending seats and could be at risk of losing a majority, including Colorado, Maine, Iowa, Alabama, Michigan, Texas and Kansas.

“Since becoming Senate Majority leader in 2015, Mitch McConnell has stolen a seat on the Supreme Court, tried to take health care away from 20 million Americans, and stopped the Senate from doing anything that isn’t confirming extreme right-wing judges to lifetime appointments,” the campaign reads. “But here’s the good news: Mitch could lose his current job this November. Not only is he up for re-election, but more importantly, the Republican party is defending 22 Senate seats, and they only control the Senate by three.”

I was wary of donating to them because, from the name, I thought they were just going to give it to McGrath (who already has a ton of money and doesn't look to be polling too well), but then I looked into it and they are actually evenly dividing it among many Democratic Senate candidates. They even let you customize how you want your donation to be divided up, if someone wants to do that.

I think that's the only way Amy has a chance in this one. Turtle is up by double digits. And that's not adding in any Russian help he would likely get if it was close.

That's what the title says.

I was just pointing out that the race is looking like an unbelievable long shot for Amy McGrath at the current time.

I wanted him out badly, but I think the money is best spent elsewhere. And I think that's probably what the party is doing.

is to stop Moscow Mitch from being Majority Leader in the Senate and switch him to Minority Leader. Getting rid of Turtle in Kentucky is almost an impossibility. That's my take on it anyway.

Yea, we probably can’t get rid of him, but just make him ‘watch‘ while we take over and clean up the country around him.

of the highest order but folks, there is no human who can defeat him in Kentucky. Best to focus on other races in order to win the Senate!

Defeat them and neuter Mitch. Collins, Tillis, Graham, Gardner, Ernst, McSally...if we get enough of them Mitch will be irrelevant.

We have good chances to flip seats in Maine, Arizona, both Carolinas, etc...let's DO IT!

The issue is protecting the vote! My parents live in NC, they're elderly and voting by mail because they're high risk for COVID. They have already sent in their votes for Biden and Cunningham.

It's going to be a lean month, but nothing is more important than getting these republicans out of office.
