Lucy McBath was an underdog two years ago, knocking off incumbent U.S. Rep. Karen Handel in a closely watched race. Handel is now back for a rematch, hoping that larger turnout during a presidential election year turns the tide and sends her back to Washington.
In many ways, this new contest mirrors the last one. McBath, a Democrat, still draws heavily on her personal story defined by the shooting death of her teenage son in 2012. She had never run for office before when she decided after the school shooting in Parkland, Fla., left 17 dead that her perspective was needed in Congress.
McBath is again emphasizing gun control and health care on the campaign trail, while also touting her successes during her initial term in office.
Handel says her public service background and long-standing ties to the district make her more in tune with voters and better qualified to represent them in Washington. And she is promoting a law and order platform that describes recent protests as destructive, violent and anti-police.
Georgias 6th Congressional District is no longer as deeply red as it once was in 2016 Republican Tom Price won re-election with 62% of the vote and Handel knows her success will depend on the enthusiasm of voters devoted to President Donald Trump, as well as Republicans who have become disenchanted with him but want to see the seat in GOP hands.

(5,584 posts)I'm worried with Trump on the ticket, that Repubs will make gains here.

(3,769 posts)This district has been trending blue since I moved here four years ago. McBath has been leading Handle in the polls by 2-3 points consistently all year.
