I don't see any coming together of "us" and "them".

Liberals, progressive, Democrats - we reason, our minds can be changed with good reasoning and discussion (not slogans). We see the world as one - people of all types of equal value, we work toward all making progress - we delight in diversity. We are open minded, see science for a way to learn about our world, a way to move forward. We have a sense of humor, can laugh at ourselves when we are ludicrous....we understand satire, and irony. We cherish the arts, relish creativity. We work hard to not fall prey to propaganda - we always engage our brain, yet we also have big hearts and sometimes find it tough to put our feelings - our emotions - into words. We tend to be optimists, yet we see what is coming - be it COVID (and how it is being mishandled), Climate Change (to me, this is the BIG ONE). We strive to work for the win/win. We tend to chafe at authority, and authoritarians.

Conservatives see the world not only as us and them, but me and you, and to them, life is win/lose. Those that are beholden to fire and brimstone, preach from the pulpit, my way or the highway are unreachable - they are THE chosen and the rest of us are doomed chumps. All ideas have to benefit corporation, big business. They exhibit cult and herd mentality and whatever appears from the mouths of those on Faux News, or right wing hate radio, becomes embedded as truth. They live in a world of hoaxes. Many are insanely jealous of anyone who is like us - that can laugh, form healthy relationships, and can work through complex issues, rather than just go for the two word meme. Many are just spending their time here on earth as a way station waiting for the big rapture, in which they firmly think that THEY are chosen to move on. Though they benefit from things scientists and creativity make, they can't or don't want to understand it, so are living a life of hypocrisy. Each has a one issue trigger that cements them into this conservative box - be it abortion, religion, guns - but that single issue is the deal breaker. There is no reason beyond it.

How can those two world views ever come together? How can our country move forward when the majority are being held hostage by the minority world view? And I am only referring to the ideological split. Overlay on that the seduction of power and money (which tends to override ideology - the true haves and have nots - another way to slice the pie.

These are the things I ponder as I lie in bed at night....and after my coffee (as in now). Either it was always like this and it takes some experiences and years to see it - or we are in one of those make or break critical places in history.

Please consider writing an essay for your local paper.

More people should read and consider what you have written.

Let's say 30% of the world are selfish assholes. They can't survive unless most of the world are not as they depend on the 70%'s goodwill and/or complacency to thrive. Suppose some fatal disease targets them all and now the population is reduced by the selfish 30%. Out of the remaining population, eventually 30% of them would become selfish assholes. We will always have such people because as long as virtue exists someone will see an angle in exploiting it.

Most conservatives I know are one issue obsessors and in many cases it’s abortion

Although “raising my taxes in order to give lazy people a free ride” is usually up there, too.

They couldn’t care fuck-all about anything else.

Religion, and a belief we are generally on a righteous and common quest for happiness and security used to hold us together, IMO. Trump has accelerated an exposure of what is wrong with America, in every measure.

The People must be taken care of first, if we are to survive, the Have and Have-not issues.

Purity tests on both sides have fueled the divisions. We all must agree to disagree on many levels. Those forces that want us to fail push the trigger issues to maintain divisions.

hard to "come together" or "reason" with folks who refuse to recognize your legitimacy.

Perhaps it's up to the RWers to compromise for a change.

Fox and right wing radio are brainwashing great gobs of people, day in and day out. As long as these media sources are allowed to spew lies and hate unfettered, the divide will not go away.

As was already stated on a previous reply, it takes two to tango. While the LEFT is smart enough to understand that, at times, compromise is the best answer which ultimately helps both sides, the RIGHT absolutely will not bend.

In my opinion, this has been a setback to Dems time and time again. We try to compromise yet the Reps won’t and given the chance (i.e., a majority in the Senate), they will think nothing of totally bowling us over. It’s their way or the highway in other words. This attitude by the right negates the left being able to “go high when they go low”.

Therefore, Dems are going to have to learn to fight Republicans like Republicans fight Dems. We don’t have the luxury of being any less forceful. That time is now. When Biden wins and we have both houses, I want the Dems to ram their agenda right down the choking throats of the Republicans. It’s time the Republicans learn how it feels and it is the only thing they will respect.

No quarter!

Am I angry? Yes of course. But anything less than this by the Dems will only be viewed as weakness by the Republicans because force is all they understand.

We bowl THEM over and then we try to pick up the pieces and move on. Vote, everyone!!! My life depends on it and yours may very well too!

We are all adrift at sea in a life-boat a thousand miles from land. Some people are rowing for land. Some people are rowing away from land. Some people are trying to turn the boat over and capsize it. At some point everyone not rowing for shore must be thrown from the boat or EVERYONE will die.
