Trump's weekend rallies showed just how unhinged his campaign is

Vox

President Donald Trump is traveling around the country and holding packed campaign rallies in the middle of a pandemic with few masks and no social distancing. These campaign rallies serve as snapshots of the president’s messaging as he heads into the home stretch of his flagging reelection campaign. The picture isn’t pretty.

From the podium, Trump routinely mocks local regulations against large gatherings, which he refers to without a sense of irony as “protests against stupidity.” Instead of touting his accomplishments or outlining a second-term agenda, Trump is praising white people for their genes and suggesting women of color who serve in Congress should be prosecuted. He’s offering apologia for the Confederacy while barely trying to conceal his authoritarian designs.

Those tuning in to Trump’s rallies will see a power-hungry president who is increasingly turning up the race-baiting and attacks on the free press. His base loves it, but it should worry everyone else.

Trump’s Friday evening speech in Bemidji, Minnesota, began just before news broke of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death. Trump made it through his more than two-hour speech without learning about it, which resulted in surreal scenes of him talking about his two Supreme Court nominations in the past tense as people yelled out things like, “Ginsburg is dead!”

Speaking in a largely white part of a largely white state, the big takeaway from Trump’s speech was how many different forms of racism it featured. He began by alluding to Minnesota’s Somali population and said, sarcastically, “Are you having a good time with your refugees?”

...if you take as a given that he's very unlikely to win a real election, maybe the his goal is to get the brownshirts so fired up that they attack non-white voters en masse, resulting in such chaos on election day that the SCOTUS is called in to rule -- and guess what they'll decide.

So he's going all out as absurd, nasty, and racist as possible. The problem is he's appealing to his hardcore base, who was already going to vote for him. I'm not sure such rhetoric is going to appeal to any people on the fence.

He is like a desperate gambler throwing all his money on the roulette table at one time, rather than trying to cut his losses. I'm thinking, he could possibly become even more unhinged.

It's only the people in the audience who get mocked for wearing them. Of course they won't, how cold that be patriotic? A percentage of them go home already infected, and spread it to their families - after every one of these rallies.

Nobody gets close to Chump except his own employees, and they get tested almost every day. There aren't enough test kits for US, but his staff all get tested regularly.

Everyone who gets anywhere near him is tested, every place he goes is cleaned and sanitized, and social distancing (from him) is rigorously enforced.

Hasn't he touted being constantly tested as the reason he hasn't contracted the virus... as if being tested protects you?

I have trump humper relatives in both of those states who travel 300 - 400 miles to attend trump rallies. All were present at the Bemidji rally. They have been doing this since before 2017. A sign of just how sick they really are!

I drove myself a little crazy trying to figure out the devotion to him and the inability to see what he's really all about. I have family who see him as the only hope for the world! I gave up trying. It's just not possible to find a rational explanation for this kind of lunacy.

I cannot understand at all, and believe me I have tried. I will say these relative are two issue voters, all about anti-abortion and guns. They ignore an awful lot of data other than those two issues. My middle brother who always been a moderate Republican has just recently joined my sister on the dark side. My heart hurts for them almost daily.

He still is in office. No intent do toss him out. Think of the damage this demented pos is going to do either re-elected or not in the next four months. Yet there he sits and there he stays no chance of saving the Republic.
