I think many of these people had the "bigger" view of the US . They liked how Republicans talked about the US in a positive way. THe whole thing about opportunity and other things. And there WERE moderate republicans who did good things but we know this was changing after civil rights and decades after.

His being a republican was more of an opportunistic move .
