After witnessing the deluge of sewage on the news over the past days,
I am convinced there are now more human beings on the planet
who are evil and cannot be trusted than there are decent ones.
The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart:
"Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though
every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And
never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.
-- Genesis 8:21
God himself knew that humans could not be trusted, but He gave us a
second chance (third, forth, fifth . . .) anyway, hoping we would change.
God is more optimistic than I am.
Trump is the most despicable, repulsive person to hold public office
in this country. He makes Nixon look like an amateur at an open mic
night. How did we let this happen?

(7,510 posts)In the Christian West, the answer has always been innately evil, and humans can become good only through a relationship with God.
This inhibited any real investigation of the question until perhaps The Enlightenment. Since then, the Humanist side has tended toward the view that humans are innately good.
Ancient Chinese philosophers were unencumbered by theological assumptions, so the question was central to thinking about how personal and social development should happen, as well as political philosophy regarding governance.
