Is the 30% - 40% Trump contingent cohesive enough to find another wanna-be dictator? Do we have to keep this up forever?????

(5,294 posts)Just like the plague, the germs are always there waiting for their next opportunity. Trump took over the GOP because they were divided. Trump won in 2016 because too many on our side were complacent.
They might get defeated at look like they're gone, but they will always there, waiting for a weakness to exploit.

Granted, none of them were as bad as Trump. But they led up to him. There will always be people in this country who are willing to support authoritarianisn, racism, and power grabs.
I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said, "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance."
So, no, it will not be over when Trump is gone. Already there are Republicans who support many of the policies that Trump has championed who are trying to rebrand themselves as moderates. If they get a chance, they will push for the elimination of Social Security and Medicare. They will continue to favor legislation that benefits the 1% over the rest of us. They will continue to allow voter list purges. They will do nothing for the environment. They will take no action to eliminate systemic racism.
We cannot relax when Trump is gone. We can celebrate and I certainly look forward to the nationwide good riddance party. But we must stay activie so we don't lose whatever gains we make under Biden.

(1,602 posts)I think the current far-right conservativism arc is over. Most of the players of Nixon's Southern Strategy are either dead or retiring, and the Boomer generation which fueled them are now in their 70s or older. Without Trump, it's going to wither and die.
I think we may actually have a respite for a few years, but I accept that we're going to be dealing with Incels and a resurgent neoNazi contingent for a while. If we're lucky we ought to be able to dig out from the current mess by the time that the next wave hits.

(732 posts)No all people who voted for Trump are all bad. I have neighbors and former co-workers who did. Some were angry, some hated Hilary and thought how bad could it be, so just were hoodwinked. I also know people who voted Trump and are proud of him (they are not friends).
I want to know what to do. Many regret their vote, (they just stay silent now), the unrepentant ones I almost envision some sort of truth and reconciliation commission. I want public trials. Trials over so many crimes. Children in cages comes to mind. I want people who wear blinders to see what they have allowed. We also need to enact laws to protect what were standard practices, no more temporary appointment after temporary appointment. So how about no more than one per position per tem. We need to do too much to list it all out, but that's a start.
