The striking thing about Joe Biden is that he acknowledges when he gets it wrong.

The best story I can think of that encapsulates this is also part of one of the most contentious of Biden's career: the Anita Hill hearings.

Joe Biden was, of course, the Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee during the hearings. The Senate Judiciary Committee was about as diverse as a Provo, Utah ward house. Literally not a single woman sat on the committee. Not a single Person of Color, either. It was Biden, Kennedy, Strom Thurmond, Orrin Hatch and Arlen Specter - about as white as white can get. The most diverse thing about that committee was the fact Biden and Kennedy were not WASPs.

The hearings were a disaster. It was clear the committee was intimidated by Clarence Thomas and his accusation of a high-tech lynching. The optics were horrible - so horrible that, in 1992, the November elections ushered in the Year of the Woman. Multiple women won Senate seats and two, Patty Murray and Carol Mosely Braun, specifically mentioned the Anita Hill hearings as why they decided to run.

Shortly after the November election, Biden traveled to Chicago and met with Moseley Braun. The two had never known each other. Biden wasn't out there campaigning for her. She knew him but only because of his status as Senator. But there was a reason for the meeting: Biden wanted to shake up the Senate Judiciary Committee. He felt it was too white and too male. It did not represent the modern US Senate and he was all too aware of the optics from the Hill hearing.

He asked Mosely Braun to join the committee. She refused at first. It was not something she was entirely interested in. But he persisted and eventually was able to get her to commit. He also got Dianne Feinstein to join as well.

Biden knew the hearings didn't go well. He knew the integrity of that committee was damaged. Instead of deflecting or ignoring - he acted.

He modernized the Senate Judiciary Committee.

But it took a bit of humility on his own part to do so.

I think that's a rarity with politicians and especially in contrast to our current president.

He did. He corrected the course.

I want Joe Biden as President. We need him to correct the course. It won't be easy and everyone won't get their wish list right away. This is going to be hard work and we need to have his back every step of the way. He has a lot of cleaning up to do.

This is what happened when Obama took office, Everyone walked away and said we did our job, now you do yours. I think we have learned that it is not the way it works. First it is the clean up and goddess knows that is going to take years to repair. We have to be there 24/7 just like the President. We need to be forever vigilant.

We need to correct this and then set up safeguards so that it NEVER happens again.
