Bexar County election officials bracing for a late surge in voter applications

Bexar County election officials are bracing for a late surge of people wanting to register to vote in the Nov. 3 presidential and general election, ahead of a deadline just two weeks away.

Amid growing fears that the U.S. Postal Service won’t be able to deliver their forms in time, Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen said some people are making a “personal choice” to hand-deliver their voter forms in person.

“There’s a lot people that are just literally bringing in their own registration card because they don’t want to put it in the mail,” Callanen said Monday.

Callanen predicted her office could end up handling an additional 13,000 forms by then. Since the 2016 presidential election, the number of registered voters in Bexar County already has risen 10.8 percent, to 1,162,040 from 1,049,089.
