I live in a state, New Mexico, that has very low compliance with the census. Part of it is that there are a lot of people in rural locations, or on tribal land well off the beaten path. We also have a lot of people who may not be here illegally, and they are understandably wary of things like the census, not understanding how much they benefit by being counted.

Also, in this era of the Covid-19 pandemic, people are understandably wary of anyone who knocks on their door and wants to talk to them. Even if they have no other reason to be wary.

I had a temp job with the census in 2010, processing the forms that the door-to-door enumerators filled out. It was really quite fascinating in many ways. I am somewhat under the impression that the job I had then simply doesn't exist right now, although whether that's because of the pandemic or for other reasons, I'm not sure.

Maybe in 2030 I can have a census job again.

and thank you for your service in 2010! It sucks that the orange thing can fuck up a census that is important for this coming decade.

In 2010, when I took the census job, I thought then that perhaps I might do the same thing ten years down the road. Well, the ten years have happened, and alas I don't have another census job. Personally, I'm not willing to be an enumerator, going door to door trying to persuade people who couldn't be bothered to fill out the form mailed to them, that they ought to comply.

The census is an amazing thing. At least two different times in my married life we lived at an address that popped up in the between the decennial census as one that needed to be asked extra questions. Personally, I found that fascinating. I have faint memories of the 1960 census, and recall my parents discussing it. I have zero memory of the 1970 census, although I certainly hope I filled out whatever form I needed to. 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, I recall all of them.

We are so fortunate to live in a country that actually does a full census every ten years. Too many people don't get it. When I worked for the census in 2010, all too often someone would write THIS IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL on the form and not give us any information. Sigh. It's actually in the Constitution, which shows how incredibly ignorant so many people are.
