.@senatemajldr Mitch McConnell is on the list of regrets for the ceremony honoring Ruth Bader Ginsburg at the Capitol today, where she is the first woman ever to lie in state, a source tells me
@GOPLeader is also not expected to attend and has not been seen

(34,059 posts)a ceremony because of the supposed hipocrisy of doing so when they were about to tear down her lifetime legacy. I strongly disagreed with that position.
BUT - McConnell had vowed to do just that by ramming through Trump's court pick. For him to attend and pretend to pay respects would not be welcome, from my perspective.

(92,116 posts)fellow justices paying their respects, and republicans in congress trying to ram through a SC pick less than 60 days before an election, of a person who is the exact opposite of everything RBG stood for

(34,059 posts)While I am sure the decisions from the court will be less likely to be ones I agree with going forward, these are people she worked with for decades and, in some instances as been close friends with, for decades. A professional disagreement about the outcome of cases is dramatically different from a declared politically motivated intention to ram throgh an appointment of a person who is the exact opposite of everything she stood for.

(32,017 posts)Frankly, I am relieved. The idea of Moscow Mitch paying respects to RBG turns my stomach. I hope he stays far away and hidden all day.

(677 posts)...in honor and in memory of one of Americas best humans, if you were to look across the room and behold McConnell and McCarthy in postures of respect, dressed to be seen, I think youd feel as if you just looked at your ankles and discovered the presence of two ticks, burrowing into your flesh.

(11,728 posts)The facade of pleasantries is falling away, which is better for people to see. I think that Democratic politicians and liberals in general can still (and to many people chagrin) do try to find common ground with those on the right. As a human quality, it is admirable. Many of us couldn't stand Antonin Scalia for his views, but to see that RBG was still a friend to him and they were able to maintain a relationship, I think is a good thing mainly.
Many of the right wingers, especially like McConnell and McCarthy have chosen the path the Newt Gingrich laid out, which is a "total warfare" approach. They try to blame Democratic leaders for being divisive when they take a stand, but the reality is that the right wingers have removed their humanity and the country suffers for it.
It is better that neither shows up as it would be an obvious counterfeit show of respect. More for photo op than to actually honor her service.
