President Trump intends to choose Amy Coney Barrett to be the new Supreme Court justice, CNN reports.

In conversations with some senior Republican allies on the Hill, the White House is indicating that Barrett is the intended nominee.

Barrett is polarizing because of her extreme beliefs. That ensures the division and acrimony off which Trump thrives.

Her radicalism is chalked up to her brand of Christianity. That allows conservative Christians to proclaim their victimhood and Trump hopes it will alienate Christians from Barrett's Democratic foes, and thereby rob Biden of votes.

She's female, which Trump, thanks to his misogyny, thinks is enough to keep women on her side.

This is the most Machiavellian pick.
