I'm teaching remote- PBS-I get a "walk-through" and I get marked down because

I am not worried, I have 4 years left and I am UNION strong

but how the fuck are you supposed to go to the kids home and make them participate

Heck, some kids log on then mute themselves and have their picture up -pretty sure they are not there.

We can not require them to be on camera.

GOD I HATE THIS

I haven’t been able to get on the zoom classroom for my 6 yr old granddaughter. I hope her teacher isn’t counting it against her for grandma error!

In case some students (or grandmas!) have technical difficulties or other issues. They can watch it later. I think the recording will have to be uploaded by the teacher to another platform, depending on what’s available from the district.

I’ve learned this because my spouse has been teaching college courses since the spring, and since some of his students are planted around the world in different countries and time zones, they can’t attend a class that occurs at 3 am in their country.

Also, you can check if students who weren’t visibly in attendance have watched the recording, and for how long.

Settings allow for excluding participants video from showing but everyone seeing everyone's faces is what helps keep virtual teaching more like a classroom.

I do it, and my wife is teaching grades one and two, virtually.

So she's really teaching parents and grandparents, too.

That’s a little crazy, imo. But whatever. Then you have to deal with some kids not getting full access to their education through no fault of their own.

Virtual education can work well at the college level (for all but lab or studio involved practices), but I think it’s way too problematic for public elementary schools.

What happens in families that have 3 kids but only 2 devices?

It's variable from district to district, but most schools here have found a way to provide a Chromebook to each student, not expecting the home to have them.
So the problem becomes Internet.
Xfinity is providing free wifi if you are near a hotspot, and some districts are providing hot spots to homes.

Still, we have homes with no Internet and my wife has 9 kids who come to school and with an aide take the same online instruction as my wife provides to both first and second grade but they are in the next room.

Gold rush country, Mariposa County, where Yosemite National Park is but she's outside the park.

of remote teaching. About 1/3 of my classes are never present and I can't get but one or two kids to ask/answer a simple question. Very frustrating spring and fall. Plus the school system budget is broken and today was the last day I had a school provided hotspot for connectivity. Back to our lousy Windstream account that fails like today with even the mildest of sprinkles, heaven forbid when have heavy rain or snow....then no connectivity, if we are lucky we have dialup speed....And I have my formal observation in the first week of October....

especially the Spec Ed. (both K-5 and high school). One friend is a retired teacher and is trying to help her grandchild remotely at home and she is soooooo frustrated! The high school kids are blowing it off and the parents don't know how to help and some don't give a shit. This is a very large, urban district and the virus is still a problem that is difficult to control.

All of them do not want to go back to in-class teaching until Covid is under control in the community though.

Districts shouldn't be evaluating teachers this year...it is ridiculous to do so.

They did crap like that and I fought them as the union rep at my site. If it is a state requirement to evaluate teachers that requirement can be changed for an emergency like this is. No one should expect the normal aspects of the school year to continue at this time. Absurd!!! I hope your union is a strong one. Mine was pretty weak.
