LOL. Apparently right-wingers are outraged bc the creepy religious cult that Amy Barrett belonged to

is not the specific creepy religious cult that partly inspired Handmaid's tale.

Get it? Our SCOTUS nominee was in a charismatic Christian group that called women "handmaids" who had to obey the men who were called "heads". But, you see, there are lots of other nutty Christian cults that also called women "handmaids" and forced them to be obedient, and it wasn't Barret's specific cult, or any specific cult, but the whole Christian cult movement in general that Margaret Atwood drew from for the Handmaid's Tale.

Nothing to see here!

were still in that group, am I mistaken? I think her husband and his father, and her father were also members. Once you are in one of these cult groups, it's not easy to leave, and someone here posted an article from a former member describing how members who left were shunned by the group, kind of like other high control cult groups.

I wondered how this would set with other religions. All religions who think they have the only truth, and think their beliefs are all the matters, would most likely tend to disagree with someone who is, or was in a cult. Cults control their members, so if she is still in that group it would be her religious leader who would be giving her advice, through her husband, the head of the household.

I guess even right wing evangelicals might tend to be against what the believes according to the group cult thinking.

America is a vast sea of creepy, religious cults, with most make up the various wings of the religious right. And their primary mission is to make the country and the world a creepy, religious cult. For them, The Handmaid's Tale is a docudrama. They really are that fucked up.

The ones we've heard of from Jim Jones to Heaven's Gate and beyond just scratch the surface of cults bubbling below the radar.
